Compatibility of a CJ3B or DJ3A column shift in a CJ2A

Post by acmack » Sat Jun 22, 2019 9:15 am

Hi, I'm looking to return my early CJ2A to a column shift and was wondering if any or all parts from a column shift CJ3B, DJ3A, Wagon or Jeepster parts could be used?

Thanks David

Good question, but I always assumed they were the same transmission and shift linkage. Personally, I would get the parts and make them work.

Some DJ-3a Column shift parts will adapt to the CJ-2A. CJ-3B had a T-90 floor shift, only 4WS Colum Shift Universal Jeep was the early CJ-2A. Check out the DJ-3A parts manual and the 1949 Universal Jeep Parts Book.

David,
I just removed a working column shift transmission and steering column from my CJ2A #14477. Everything else on the jeep had been modified or changed out, so I reinstalled a top shift T-90 in it but saved the transmission & steering column along with other column shift parts and pieces. I will be looking to sell it, please PM me if you have any interest and I'll be happy to send you some pictures.
Sincerely,
Dennis

No other Willys vehicle side shifting parts will work on a CJ2A effectively. The column shift CJ2A parts are proprietary to the 2A. All other side shifting Willys vehicles share many of the same parts, but not the 2A.

If I am reading this correctly, David, your CJ used to be a column shift and was converted to floor ???
This would help. The transmission case would already be machined for the side shift linkage. Don't think the later floor shift T-90s were. Case had the casting but no holes.
Dennis's offer sounds like a good one. All the parts the floor shift does not have in one box.

I took Dennis up on his offer and drove out to his place. He had everything from the column to the linkage and the tranny.

Thanks Dennis!

FYI. DJ3A shifter is different from CJ2A. The clutch and trans rods will interchange and work even though they are not the same. The shifter, cane and springs are different. The cane is an odd length. SW, Jeepster and FC parts are not the same.
That said, some machining and or welding can adapt them to each use. I am in the process of converting a mixed bag of parts into the correct parts for a DJ3A restoration. At least my clutch, and reach rods are original and my column mast. I've had to fabricate or modify everything else. Even the Ross worm and tube.
