CJ exhaust manifold?
Is this exhaust manifold, marked A-659 on the outer arm, a CJ2A exhaust manifold?

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
A-659 was the Factory number for the unfinished Exhaust Manifold. The finished Willys Part No. for the Exhaust portion starting with the MA thru M-38 and CJ-2A thru CJ-3A was initially A-912 and morphed to 801826 during late CJ-3A and the M-38.
All had the A-659 cast on to the body at different locations.
Genuine Willys supplied Exhaust Manifolds are a prized possession today. Look for A-659 on the casting nomatter early or late part number. These were still available thru the 70's from Jeep and the A-659 numbers were not on the last of them.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
Joel, I’m specifically asking if this particular casting variant of the A-659 manifold was used on the CJ-2A or not.
I am aware of the A-912 exhaust manifold assembly, and that the A-659 was part of that assembly.
There are several casting variations of the A-659 manifold and not all of them are factory correct for an MB. Installing only the factory correct parts corresponding to my vehicles’ DoD’s is of utmost importance to me. I am having difficulty identifying this particularly cast and marked style of exhaust manifold in 1941-1945 period photos.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
I was not aware that you already knew some facts about the A-912.
Am sure there are intact CJ-2A's that will yield the secret.

Hopefully. This manifold needs to find its proper place.

Best chance to compare Castung number style is on PE-85 with original Timing Chain type engine. There are still many intact WWII vintage PE-95 10 KW's out there.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
Just looking for a simple answer. Is this particular version of the exhaust manifold a known CJ variant?

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
MIchael,
This afternoon I checked all of my CJ2-A's (five of them), all of my spare CJ engines (six of them) and all of my loose manifolds (four of them), and found one exhaust manifold with the A-659 casting on it. Only one, but it's on what I consider to be the most original, unmolested CJ2-A that I have, a mid-year 1947. Of course, we have no way of knowing for sure what may have happened in the last 72 years. It is the only one I found. I did find a GPW exhaust manifold that I didn't know I had, on the CJ engine that came out of my slat. I don't know whether this will help you any or not, I just thought I'd let you know, for what it's worth. BW
Edit to add: All of my CJ2-A's are '47s and '48s, I don't have a '45 or '46.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
Thanks Bruce for your input. I’m leaning towards believing that this exhaust manifold is CJ also which is unfortunate since it will make it useless to me.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
Many early CJ's had "Buy Back" engines, not sure how long Willys stocked them. What does Westerman say?

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
FWIW, I checked my very early '47 83XXX and found the A659 stamped on the outside of the heat riser area and had the dimples (nipples) on the arms, with no other markings that I can see. I believe this is as Joel described as a buyback engine, since it is stamped appropriately for the DOD and has an F marked head.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
Dredging up this old thread rather than starting a new one. I've read this and other similar discussions about A659 exhaust manifolds. But I've seen no mention of one like this that has the A659 cast on the back side (facing the block). Can anyone provide insight into its application? Thanks.

Re: CJ exhaust manifold?
I always recommend starting a new thread; some guys won't pick up an old one but want to read new stuff.
Your manifold is just from another/newer mold at the foundry and the date block was placed in the back. They used more than one mold in production. Nothing special.
