IDF Armored Corps Museum in Latrun Israel -- what kind of CJ?

Post by Fushigi Ojisan » Thu Sep 20, 2018 4:26 pm

Forgot I had this photo. All I remember was seeing the Willys logo on the side of the hood.

Curious what the middle truck is as well.

I am hazarding the cj is a 2a probably export sales. Lefty on the spare tire carrier. It was an option I believe .

Note the configuration on the Jeep Grill, the front lifting shackles and the large mouth fuel tank and the lack of floor drains on the side. It's an M-38 The middle truck appears to have GMC type wheels.

I'm guessing there is no way to move this to the M38 forum. I was told at the time the vehicles were veterans of the 1948 war for Independence (which went through 1949). Google Images showed images of M38s from the Six-Day war but those have full military markings.

Found a couple more photos of the IDF Armored Corps Museum in Latrun, so here they are

Image
I don't remember seeing this unit there in 2012, it has the period markings for Six-Day War. Note that up on the hill is a Sherman mounted on top of a concrete pedestal; it was formerly the water tower for the British base that was taken over by the Israelis in 1948 and later became the museum.

The M38 in my original photo has a companion. I see the other two trucks are still there.

And note the CJ front floor drains on the sand color Jeep. It also has a large fill pipe on the fuel tank. My guess is that they used whatever Jeep Parts that were handy to make a fighting vehicle.

The Israelis in 1948-49 would have to have been pretty resourceful.

The only way to really get a high-res photo was to crop it into thirds, hope this works. Note the second photo you can see "WILLYS" on the hood, this is what made me think it was a CJ as opposed to an M38. Also just realized in my pic, the tan jeep is *behind* this one, I thought it was a trailer going by the pic!

That grill is 50's and up, the headlight rings are from a 40's passenger car, front drive flanges are 50's up. Jeeps are a "Heinz 57" variety.
