I understand completely! You are not the only one!

In addition to Frank, above ( hi Frank ), Fred Coldwell has jeeps like yours. He even wrote a book on the topic, “Preproduction Civilian Jeeps.”

Sometimes intel comes from unexpected places.
It hit me, I did a 230 Tornado engine a while back and I got the info I needed from an old 1965 Chilton's Manual I have.
Dug it out. It has a section on Jeeps. For differential intel, go to Differential section and there it was.
Had it all the time. Just took a while for the Grey Matter to kick in. I learned a long time ago, there is a point in the day when my brain shuts down. From experience, I have learned to recognize when this happens. Time to go do something else, before I screw something up. Come back in the morning. Amazing how simple, after the morning coffee, the problem turns out to be.
Shims at the rear axle flanges are to adjust pre load on the individual outer axle bearings. It was in the book.
Adjusting one side has no effect on the other side, as I first considered.
Now we all now.
Still not sure why the shim stack was so much thicker one the right side.
?????
Gonna check it out.

Any one know what the pinion seal part number is for the rear differential ???
Like from NAPA or a seal manufacturer number.
Dana 42/44.
The books NAPA use to have, covered early CJ, but the new computer never heard of one.
I would get one from Ron, but would take a week and I hope the jeep is out of here by then.
While the jeep was hovering on jack stands getting a new brake system ( that did came from Ron ), I was servicing it. No oil in the rear differential. ??? When I put some in, I found out why. It ran out the pinion seal, almost as fast as I put it in the fill plug.

Mike,
If the lube oil is coming out as fast as you put it in, I suggest also check the seal surface of the yoke. It could be badly pitted therefore a new seal just won't do it. Consider a new or good used yoke, or a speedy sleeve that slips over the damaged surface. Jeep pinion seal part number is 998092 which NAPA should be able to convert to a current number in their system.

Your post was Dana 42/44. Was that meant to be "41" instead?

On the CJ2A Forum, they have a number listed for local stores.

Hope this gets you running.

Thanks for the input.
Have the yoke off and the seal out now. Number on the seal is, Victor 49164-C4. That did not cross over on the NAPA computer.
Yoke looks good, Brad. Seal was ancient. Rubber lip that was hard as a rock and cracked.
After some investigating, turns out the local NAPA store had the seal on the shelf. Looks to be a direct replacement.
Old seal had a gasket behind it, to seal to the front of a step in the diff. housing. New seal has a red silicone gasket that is part of the seal. Otherwise, it looks the same. Only new !
Part # 27SS2633. for $16.33.
If you are not in a hurry, Ron has the 998092 in stock for $7.50.
This is a Dana 44, Rus. Has the cover gasket that has the flat/straight sections. Not just round like the Dana 41.

I was in NAPA for another reason and it was a little slow so I told the counter guy to fire up the computer.
I gave him the 998092 number and sure enough, it converted to 27SS2633. As Brad said.
I noticed, when I removed the 27SS2633 seal from the box, it had 45155 on the seal.
He looked that up and it came up 27SS2634. ?????????????
I ask, what's the diff ?? He looked both up and they came up as seals for Heavy Ford or Chevy pick up trucks.
Trivia !
The 27SS2633 is in and the leak is stopped !! :D

Pop quiz. One of those little things that keep knawing at me.
The jeep is about ready to hit the floor.
Question is, the left front axle shaft. Outer end. Has a snap ring groove and external snap ring that is outside the bolt on splined hub, on the spindle. The right side does not.
????
Why ??
I am thinking if one is needed on the left, should be one on the right as well. Only diff. is the length of the inner axle shaft.

Are the left and right axle shafts the same type?

Good question. I had the axle stripped to the spindles, to sand blast & paint the brake backing plates, but did not pull the axle assemblies out.
The knuckles were well packed and all felt good so I did not go any farther.
The left splined hub had two pretty thick shims between the hub & spindle. The right side only had a gasket.
Both outer axle shafts would slide in and out after assemble. The snap ring limited how far the left shaft would slide in.
This is what is eating on me.
The wheels turn free, in any position, with the steering wheel turned from stop to stop.
I even tried this with right outer axle shaft pushed in as far as it would go and then pulled out.

There was info posted on the 2A page that discusses all three types. Hopefully you'll find what you're after.

Those were great links, Rus. Thank you !
Definitely dealing with Bendix axle shafts.
I did have the spindles removed and the outer bushing, in the spindle, did have a flange.
Don't know about the inner bushings having a flange. Did not pull the axles, so don't know.
I did push the right axle ( no snap ring ) in as far as it would go and turned the spindle in all steering positions. It came up solid, against something and there was no sign of any internal contact or binding.
The jeep has 31000+ miles on it. The way it came through the door and I drove it in. For brakes.
The axle & snap ring is just something I ran across and curiosity jumped in. I try to hold up my end.
The former owner was the father of the current owner and dad ( RIP) was a jeep dealer/mechanic back in the 50's and early 60's. Never going to know all the details on this one.
The jeep is on the floor and ready to roll and I like it. Gonna turn it loose.
Thanks again.
