M416 question

Post by m270mlrs2 » Mon Feb 28, 2022 5:36 pm

Good evening I just recently found this trailer. A friend found this trailer on a lot he was cleaning and the owner stated that the trailer had been out there under the tree for more than 30 years. The owner told my friend he could have it so he called me and asked if I wanted it because he had no use for it. I went and picked it up and it looked pretty sold it it was hard to see the bed due to all the leaves and debris in it. I got it home washed it down and started looking it over. I had to change one tire that had been flat for who know how long and was hard to roll. When I changed the wheel the hubs rolled with hardly any effort and amazingly the hand brake worked. The bed is pretty solid no rust through or rot. It looks like at some point a limb fell and damaged the front wall but not bad. The landing leg is frozen it won’t release I guess that is the way it was left laying when it was put under the trees. The pig tail is shot rusted shut. The rear drain works but the fron one is frozen. It looks pretty original and the underneath has no rust and the original semi gloss green. I have the NOS pigtail and will probably change the wiring harness. I guess it’s not bad for gas money and a rainy day drive. Let me mow if anyone has tips or suggestions about that landing leg. I plan on getting in to it more when I have some time just wanted to get it cleaned and touch up the bare spots with primer. Thanks again I was pretty excited now I have a trailer for my Mutt.

The landing led is held up or down by a pin. The handle is on the left side . Best to free up the pin with WD-40 or PB Blaster. Rotate the pin back and forth to free up then pull straight out with lots of force. At the same time push or pull the leg. It works well when freed up.

m270,

that's a great find. As the trailer was painted 4-color camo, the military registration number was supposed to be relocated to the inside wall of the trailer. usually on the inside of the front or rear panel. It could still be there so check the interior carefully and you may be able to make it out. If it was US Army, the registration would begin with 6. If it was USMC, the number could be on the rear cross-member and would probably begin with a 3.
I hope you find it !

there is a square pipe plug in place for when you have to replace the landing leg lock pin. unscrew that plug and also squirt in WD40 from that direction. this also gives you a place where you can use a long drift pin to tap the lock pin, and help free it up.

That pin is pretty frozen I have been spraying the PB Blaster penetrating oil on it for a few days. I did see a number on the front panel it is pretty faded i will try to get a picture in the light. I did see that tis was an Army trailer. The small data plate on the front right is barely readable but it does say Army. I didnt want to hit the plate with the pressure washer I will try a rag and water. Should i primer the bed until I can get it sandblasted or just keep it covered and dry? Here is a picture of the small plate

That small plate is the "procurement" or responsible plate.

Another question about the channel rails 19207 10924587-2 CHANNEL RIGHT 1
3 XDOZZ 19207 10924587-1 FRAME SECTION,STRUC LEFT. Do they make replacement rails or I guess they can be repaired they are both pretty beat up at the front. Thanks Also is it hard to remove the cargo bed? It looks easier to have it off to clean and paint the frame as well as the bed it self.

The cargo bed is held on with four (six?) bolts which hold the bed to the frame by small tabs on either side and the rear. Easy to do. No bolts through the floor to the frame at all.

If you remove the fenders first it is even easier. You can see the tab near the front of the trailer in the photo.
