Project M416 Build... Couple questions

Post by Calaski8123 » Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:09 pm

Hello, I purchased an M416 trailer last month. I'm restoring it to use as a camping trailer. It was damaged (a tree fell into the rail) and it has already been modified (tailgate added and hitch extended). I know those modifications are sacrilegious for some but they actually fit my needs perfectly. I own a 1965 Mustang Fastback that's all original, so I understand that desire for originality. I look at it this way. This one was already "ruined" so I'm repurposing it for my needs and not modifying an original one.

Anyway, I have a few questions. I'm going to register it. The last owner registered it as a 2012 Homemade trailer with NJ DMV. The NJ DMV assigns a VIN HMDEDXXXXXX (homemade, EDison - the DMV office it was registered at and a sequential number.)

I would like my registration to be closer to the real info if possible. There is no data plate but there was a 6 digit stencil number painted on the trailer and there is an 8 digit number on the hitch right before what remains of the pintle. Are either of these original? VIN?

Pics attached. My buddy is helping me get the dent out hopefully and I've already started stripping it. I'm going to use tintable roll on bed liner to match my new Bronco. I think it's going to look great when done.

I only paid $150 for it, I think it's worth the gamble.

The only correct number would have been on an aluminum data plate on the right rear of the rear panel (now a tailgate). That data plate would have had the manufacturer, date of delivery (dod) and a serial number.

PS, you might consider pulling it with something a little more reliable!

LOL the Bronco is a beast. I love it.

Yeah that plate is long gone unfortunately. What is that stamped number on the hitch? Do others have that?

I'm looking to register it and I'm wondering if I can use that number since it's stamped? It was registered as a homemade trailer by it's last owner and they just assigned a random VIN.

I posted a few more pics. You see the bent rail. I'm going i can get it straight. I know it won't be perfect but it's a camping trailer so it doesn't need to be. Also hopefully the bed liner hides a lot.

On the M416 there is no other place the serial number would be. Those other numbers are just casting part numbers for those particular parts.

I found a data plate under the paint but it doesn't tell me much. Any guesses on era based off the plate or were they the same from start to finish?

That is not a data plate. That is a procurement plate or sometimes called responsible plate.

When I got my 416, it was a farmer’s trailer. No tailgate or back plate. So no data plate.
After I repaired all the damage, I took it to our DMV in California and got new numbers for it and a title.
I then took the data off the pink slip and stamped a new data plate and bolted it to the front of the trailer.
Works for DMC and the Highway patrol, so I’m good.

M416 Serial numbers started with "6" then a letter, followed by a four-digit number. This would constitute the "USA NUMBER" of the vehicle. It would be the equivalent of a VIN. The only place it was noted on the trailer was on the data plate on the rear.

Since you do not have that, you can buy a repro date plate, choose a 4-digit number that is significant to you, add "6C" in front of it and you can go to NJ MVC and request they register your homebuilt with that number.

(NJ may say "NO." They are quite inflexible. I assume you got a bill of sale and previous registration from the last owner. That is how NJ transfers ownership and registers you as the new owner so that serial number is in the system. You can start all over, bring your receipts to the MVC with a bill of materials and you can tell them this is a new homebuilt. In that case you can ask for that USA number you 'found' on the trailer. Not that I would have ever done that in the past....)

In any case, good luck and you got a great buy!
