M100 chains
Quick opinions needed
I always thought m100 chains were the long hook post war style?
Finally opened a TM on m100’s and low and behold shows early ww2 Style chains. Dated 1951. Maybe early production deal?

Re: M100 chains
My M100 came with regular hooks (that look like the MBT hooks, but not quite identical). They look to me just like the hooks seen in the M100 manual, so I call them "original". My M100 was pretty much unmolested when I bought it (Dunbar-Kapple, delivered 5-51).
I thought those long hooks were M416 hooks. Check the M416 manual.
I suppose long hooks could've made their way on to the M100 while both trailers were in service.
I've also read posts that say the Army deleted chains on the M38 altogether (including the eyes on the pintle hook to put them on), but never could find anything official in print to prove it.
Good luck!

Re: M100 chains
Cool thank you. I find it funny that the Manual also shows a 3 hole swivel. And clearly my m100 and most others I presume have the 2 hole.
Funny on the hooks who knew?
If you are bored and have the ability, please post a pic of your hook. Thanks!!!

Re: M100 chains
Hi Finn,
I couldn't get to your email address without my computer wanting to take me down a rabbit hole, so I posted a photo of my hooks here:
http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules/gall ... .sized.jpg
I also came across this photo: http://www.g529.com/parts/Chain_Differences.jpg
Btw, mine also has a 2-hole landing leg swivel. It wouldn't be the first time I ever saw an error in an Army manual. I looked but couldn't find a copy of the MBT manual to see if maybe the Army lifted the same photo from it to illustrate the M100 manual.

You can find the MBT manual on JeepDraw.com. Yes the Army used the same photo.Ron D wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 10:56 amHi Finn,

Re: M100 chains
Interesting info! thank you.
Those chains you have are the same on Ben hurs. I wish I could post pics on here. Like I said the manual clearly shows mbt chains but I really think it was just some early version of the m100. But to see the other type on yours, i did not think of those!

Re: M100 chains
From what I've been able to find out over the years the early M100 used chains and hooks nearly indistinguishable from WWII MBT/T3 chains except for the hook markings. The later M100 used the longer chains and hooks like the M416. I had an unmolested 2-51 Strick with WWII style hooks.
The hooks in the picture posted here are not correct for any 1/4 ton trailer. They are Ben Hur type hooks. That is not to say they were not a depot or motorpool replacement. Unless you are shooting for a factory restoration look, I'd leave them.

The first picture is of Ben Hur chain hooks and the second picture with the three sets of chains is not correct. The chains labeled M100 are also Ben Hur chains.Ron D wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 10:56 amHi Finn,

Re: M100 chains
You are very welcome!
BTW, I should have addressed the two vs three hole landing leg swivel. The three hole is WWII and the two hole post war M100/M416 however I have seen what looked to be an unmolested early M100 with a three hole. Could have been changed but I'm not sure.
