K-38 1944
Here is my K-38 that I bought last December and finally drove to Ohio to get it.
Tag reads. K-38 9-28-44 SN 2996. Dwg 172A78-922
FWD Auto Co. Eagle? Div. Appleton? Wisconsin
Brass tag above Tool yard 784. Some traces of Strata Blue paint so am finding out history if I can from previous owner. Tickled to get it with all the bins inside.
Fit just right in my Tacoma with 6' bed 2,277 miles and didn't budge at all.
Hard to see but blue is showing under the O.D. and a few other places
Original tires so will get modern ones for using it and keep these stored away for now.

Re: K-38 1944
It was for certain painted blue at some point. I have taken rims off to have the tires removed. I told them at mechanic that the rims are impossible to find and do not attempt removal if they are not certain it won't damage them. Anyone had tires removed and was it auto/tire shop or maybe a motorcycle place?

I got my adapter today for a hitch mount. Made in USA by Croft H3la mixer weighs 9.5 lbs and will fit 2" or 1 7/8" ball. Rated 2,000 lbs so will not be a problem on the trailer. 3/4" bolt holding the pieces together and I need to grind the edges on the corner as they stick out a bit and 1 through bolt hole through the adapter and ring to keep it from moving if it can. Probably could fabricate something but cost of parts and time not sure it is worth it. 62.95 plus shipping.

Well somewhat interesting paint schemes. I got my tires removed and am cleaning wheel parts. There is a seal that hold bearing in the back of the rim and I have found red primer then a light od paint then strata blue and the dark od it is now. My speculation is original od when made and the Air Force got it or possibly was Army Air Corp to begin with. Then repainted it. When it was surplussed out it was painted darker od with the stars to fit the seller and help with making it "look" more military. The PO said he didn't know about the blue and owned it 12-15 years.

Re: K-38 1944
Please take note. This will be a working trailer for me. I am downsizing my business and beginning to head towards retiring from an electrical contractor so it will eventually have all my tools from my business in it to use. So I will not cause anything to be taken away from the history aspect of the trailer but it won't just sit somewhere.
I closed up 15 holes that were in it from various uses and 1 spot clearly had a vise mounted there and I put one on. My wife will make me a waterproof cover for it.
I also have put lights on it and the PO gave me a license plate holder that was not installed and I looked at pictures of where it went so I remounted it and also made a wraparound piece to have it long enough for the passenger side taillight.
Cleaning rims and checking bearings for new tires.

Well on the road now. Got tubes and tires finished wiring lights and chains so about 25 miles shakedown today. Bias tires so it took me a minute to figure out the bouncing but when it went away in a couple minutes I knew why. Painted rims black the green just came off too easy and blue showing up everywhere so black it is. Replaced 1 bearing that had a small crack on cage but cleaned everything else and re greased bearings and mounted wheels. Bounced like crazy when I first drove off but remembered bias tires so it went away. Boy it is a tiny little thing. Can barely see top of vise in mirror. Wife is working on the cover for the vise. Pretty wild to see a 77 year old trailer behind a 2 month old pickup.
Here is the lunette to ball adapter I got and on another topic

Re: K-38 1944
Had a boat trailer we pressed into service to recover a family Cannon in Ohio. Made a wooden deck for the trailer and it towed just fine to Ohio, once there, we added about 3000Lb of cannon to it and spent an hour bolting it on some 2x8" wooden skids to the deck with lag bolts and the whole trailer with load bounced a foot in the air on every single bump in the highway. I was only about 12 at the time, but told my Dad to stop and get shocks...
We went to a place across from a Montgomery Wards, where they unbolted everything we did, raised the cannon off, welded tabs for a set of shocks bought from across the street at Wards, tied it back down and we hit the road 2-3 hours late from the "plan"....It towed flat and stable as could be, no more issues, not a bounce it seemed.
Dad was sure happy as he thought we'd have to cancel the mission to recover the cannon and I was happy that I apparently inherited my Grandfathers "engineering" gene.
Maybe bolt on shock kit would go far in stabilizing her

It is empty now so with no weight it bounces. My Civvy bantam has no shocks either only military used them. It bounces also but with weight it is smooth running. When I worked for the county my first bucket truck has biased tires and you couldn't even talk on the radio until they rounded out sounded like you were crying.

Re: K-38 1944
On another topic I have about tubes the ones put on for the initial run were wrong and one went flat not an offset valve stem that is needed. A tube for a Ford 8N tractor is offfset and I had to drill out valve stem openings for the TR 15 stem instead of the TR 13 stem that would have been original. Small matter. Holding air o.k. and 20 plus miles so far so good.

Re: K-38 1944
I didn't like marring the paint when I took the wheel covers off so I made a wheel "wrench" 5/8 plywood scrap and works great. Been a while since I have used a compass and divider for layout

Very nice, a 3D printer might offer the same.
I just wish there were two rims out there loose that someone would actually be willing to package and ship.

Maybe a printer would but pushing a button is no fun. I would be happy with 1 rim.

Re: K-38 1944
Well got the trailer weighed today so I can register it in Florida. 460 lbs. Specs said 410 lbs empty so with my hitch adaptor, the vise and my lights/chains plus a few little doo dad's inside would not disagree on weight. With 2 trailers now I made a dolly to move them around going to get harder as I get older. All scrap pieces except for some 1/1/4" angle I bought to make a little insert to move up and down for the 2 different tounge heights. Way beefy than needed but it was on hand. The handle is galvanized and I know it is a hazard to weld so it was outside and a fan also blowing across the work zone.
Also made little holders for my trailer markers just 1/2 CVPC and self taps with straps on back. I can lift them out and stow them. Getting better but that thing is hard to back up and see now that I have my work cap on my Tacoma.
