When did the 1/4 ton trailers get the angled fenders?

Post by zoro » Tue Mar 23, 2021 7:06 pm

Just saw an old photo of a GPW towing a 1/4 ton trailer towing a train. Looks like Europe due to the rail cars. Everything looked period correct until I noticed the trailer had angled fenders like the M416.

Did any of the trailers in WW2 or Korea have the angled fenders?

Zoro,
The angled fenders appeared with the M416 trailer - 1962.

During WW2 the Australian made 1/4 ton ( 2 wheeled 8 CWT No. 4 ) trailers already had the angled fenders.

Hi all,

If you can access facebook, even with out an account, you should be able to see the images of Australian trailers on this group:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/383274865477866

The flat/angled fenders on Australian made 'jeep' trailers started with the No.3 trailers in 1943, then also used on the No.3a in 1943/44 and then also (as Remko said) the No.4 in 1945.

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi,

why is it so hard to do a little research... with all respect but over the last 20+ years I researched a lot of trailer-related stuff, bought a lot of books and TM's downloaded tons of pictures, datasheets, excel schemes, etc. etc.

All to know what I know now. and with a few google searches, there is even a lot more to be found

https://www.google.com and type "Australian 1/4ton trailers ww2" and it opens a lot of info on that.

https://www.google.com/search?q=austral ... 22&dpr=2.5

But as I said, books, TM's, and other documentation are sometimes better than a www adress (due to copyrights, etc).

Many thanks for that, Ian and Remko.
I never knew these trailers existed, so please bear in mind that if some of us had never seen or heard of this type of trailer, we would have little reason to start googling something we were unaware of in the first place.
Now that we DO know, we can follow up the links and do the research for ourselves. And who knows what else we may discover? That's how knowledge develops and grows (-:

I think the trailers should have the angle fender already.
