M100 measurement

Post by 15031964 » Wed Feb 24, 2021 4:43 pm

Hi can any one please let me know the measurement between the towing cable box brackets on a M100 trailer. Mine have been partly ground off and I’m looking to replace with new angle iron.

If not the width measurement of the box will do.

Many thanks

I know this is an old post and no one else has commented on it, so it must be a correct measurement, but the M100 trailer that I have access to has the box brackets much closer to 12" between them. We would like to add a box to the trailer for display, but the measurements on the boxes we are looking at are 12" wide, which would match our current brackets.
Are we out in left field? Or just some confusion on the distance between the brackets?

Perhaps ours are incorrect, but I don't see how 18" would fit with the tie down and the outside of the tub. Hmmm..

Outside edge to outside edge on my brackets is 12 and 5/16 inches. I have what I believe is a re-pop box mounted to them and it's 12 and 1/4 inches wide.

Very timely post. I had the same question as one of my brackets appears bent out. I do not have a box but was wondering if I do install one would I have to shim.

As I remember, depending on the supplier of your box, original or repo, the box fit almost too snnuggly between the brackets, scratched some paint on the box, but it was hidden by the brackets. Then small bolt or screw and nut. One question I had was if the bolt or screw head went inside or outside the box. The reflector hardware was smooth side inside the tub and the nuts outside the tub. Didn't know if that applied to the box as well so that it did not snag the embilical cord being stored inside. We mounted out with the screww heads inside the box for this reason.

Paragraph 61 on page 56 of the M100 TM9-871A (July 1951) and the ORD9 say there's no shims between the bracket and the box. It also says the four 1/4-28 hex head cap screws that fasten the box to the brackets each get one of those special lead washers (waterproofing seal) and then the screws are inserted from inside the box with the lock washers and nuts on the outside of the box. My repop box also fits snug between the brackets, not too loose, not too tight, just right. :D

Interesting that the box would have the reflector lead washers as I don't think my lid on my box is too water tight. Maybe I'm missing some thick gasket on the lid bottom. My latch just loops over the tab with a hole for a padlock, I presume. But not a tight sealing lid.

I wondered about that too ---> why waterproof the box? For a waterproof cable? A cable that's not in the box anyway because it's connected? Sure couldn't be for buoyancy. I always thought the box should have a couple of drain holes. Am pretty sure my box is repop. I've never seen an original so don't know how they were made. The bottom corner seams on mine show daylight, also with no gasket on the lid, and no gasket in the ORD9 that I could find. Maybe the lead washers in the ORD9 were a mistake? It wouldn't be the first Army manual with one.

Another mystery. The latch on my box has no loop for locking with a padlock either. It's hard to see from the photo in the manual, but doesn't look like there's a lockable latch on it. Is yours original?

Not original. Repo from Robin up in WA. And I have passed this trailer on, so I'm going from memory on the latch, but that is how I remember it. Might be a modern convenience as this box was probably used to store display items or trailer paperwork.
