1/4 Ton trailer…. metric spindle nuts

Post by scottymac » Wed Mar 04, 2015 5:53 am

I have a 1/4 ton trailer that looks EXACTLY like a Bantam WWII trailer, BUT it is made by Mitsubishi. It has lots of metric bolts, and my big problem is getting spindle nuts that actually fit the spindle that is metric. Also, the axle is completely solid with the spindles machined from the solid axle ends…. not like the Willys or Bantam that used the Jeep spindles. I REALLY need the corect spindle nuts!!

I saw a post with a trailer that had Mitsubisi/Willys springs, so I am sure there are more out there than mine. My trailer came out of Japan; it has the Mitsi symbol stamped into the left side of the tongue rail.

Anyone have one of these, and what spindle nuts are you using? I have ordered one from a Toyota FC, hoping it will fit.

Thanks

Some M-100's have solid spindles, also. What size thread are the wheel bearing nuts on your trailer? What is the part number on the wheel bearings?

It presently has "Jeep" spindle nuts, but they are just enough too large to not allow them to tighten correctly. I have a 42 Bantam and the two are exactly the same except for the axle and the metric bolts and nuts that I keep changing out.

Thanks

Strange. Wish I were there to measure the thread and pitch.

I know of a Mitsubishi 1/4 ton and the spindle nuts are not metric. AFAIK they were exact copies. First I've heard of this :? You need to barrow a thread pitch gauge and double check the threads if you haven't already.

Thanks, Bill, what size are the ones you know of? I haven't been able to check the threads and pitch. There are many metric nuts and bolts on the trailer, so I am assuming that the spindle nuts are metric.

some tap and die sets have thread gauges included. if you haven't got those yet, maybe you can buy them separately at your local hardware store, or maybe at sears tool dept. thread gauges by themselves are inexpensive, and a handy thing to keep in the tool box.

What rims are on the axle? Are they also metric lug nuts?
Sounds like you might have a Japanese Self Defense Force version of the G529 but with a completely different axel on it.
Is this "Cherry Blossom" the stamping on the frame rail below the tub on the left side near the front of the trailer? Did you find maybe five or six digits stamped to the RIGHT of that character?

Generation 1 Mitsubishi Montero's have similar front hubs as jeeps with the same bearings, might be a source vehicle if they turn out to be Metric and the Toyota ones don't fit.

Thanks everyone! Yes the flower is on the left side on the tongue rail. I never found a number. The FC nut had an even larger ID than the Jeep. It uses regular Jeep wheels. I have many many Jeep spindle nuts for my Jeeps; some new, but still none fight tightly. I need to check the OD and threads. The other option is to just find a Bantam or Willys axle. I keep finding the civilian version, but they don't use the brake set-up.

What a pain…. I wondering about the nuts for pre IFS Toyota trucks.

Again thanks for the help. I was hoping someone else had one of these and knew what it needed. I'm sure they just didn't make one.

Tomorrow I fly back to my home in AK, and the trailer will sit until I get back down to AZ, probably in June. In the mean time I guess I'll go to the Toyota dealer and get a slection of spindle nuts……..

It's not an M100.

My friend came over, and we went through my pile of "Jeep" spindle nuts. The ID ranged from 1.548 to well over 1.6+. We used two of the smallest ones on the left axle. I think it actually worked, as I got the outside one pretty tight. I had no idea they were so many sizes. Now I need to find a few more of the smallest ID ones. I just use any and all on my Jeeps. It doesn't seem to matter.

Thank you all for the help. This has caused me to learn about the Trailers made in Japan for their defense force. I wish I knew why they made the axle solid instead of a hollow tube with the spindles welded on the ends.
