I found a baby Ben Hur trailer . I have never seen one before . It's a civilian small trailer with I think 15 inch tires . Does anyone know anything about these ? Thanks Warren Duchesne

They did like Bantam did after the war and tried to keep going in the civilian world. Do you have it in your possession?

I have one Warren. It still has the Ben-Hur logo painted on the tailgate. Bought from a fellow who hauled grass clipping with it. I have not done much research on these. There was one for sale on the web in eastern Colorado and it still had the stake racks.

A guy wants to sell me one but he wants about $1000. I might could get it for a little less . It's in pretty good shape . I think I would pay $500. But I have so many trailers I don't really need another . Warren Duchesne

WARREN:
I don't think the comment about being post-war carry-overs from the military is correct. I just found and bought one that has an original QUARTERMASTER CORP data plate dated MARCH, 1940. Says Model 40-20 and is a 3/4T trailer not a 1T like the true Ben Hurs. This one was made by someone that is not in the list of the Ben Hur makers too.... Military stirrups for loading with the tailgate down and unmolested loops for canvas ropes.

Well not quite. Ben Hur Manufacturing continued to make light duty trailers after WW2 for the civilian market. They were marketed as Be Hur and another brand sold at Sears. But that a Ben Hur Manufacturing making them is the ONLY relation to military trailers. There's no resemblance nor parts compatibility between a post-war Ben Hur civilian trailer and anything military.

Hi Dan:

Companies than made 3/4-ton military trailers in 1939-40 include Henry Spen Co,, Laverne, and Lavine Gear Co. which made a model 40-17. Is your 3/4-ton trailer made by any of these companies? Or yet another company? Could you please post a photo of its Quartermaster Corps. data tag? Thank you, and Happy New Year!

Fred,

DDTrustee has several threads in the 1/2 ton forum looking for parts or other questions on his trailer. But this one contains some photos: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=332094

Matt:

Thank you for the link to one of DDTrustee's far too numerous threads in the Towed Accessories, Trailers 1/2-ton+, subforum concerning his 1940 Lavine Gear Co. model 40-17, 3/4-ton military trailer, which he also confusingly calls a Ben-Hur trailer in half his threads. I was going to post an old photo but I see others, particularly Craig Johnson, have provided better photos than I had. DDTrustee found a quite nice prewar 3/4 ton trailer and I wish him the best in gathering information and parts for it. Thank you for your help.
