Fellas,
I just bought my trailer and need to know how do i determain if I should replace the bearings on my M416? It tows great, replacing the grease is a no brainer, it is the bearings im concerned about. They are so cheap, I dont see why I wouldnt. Thoughts?

Hi Kevin,
Suggest jacking it up. Assume lug-nuts are tight. Grab the wheel and tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and give it a shake. Feel any movement? Grab the wheel and tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and shake. Any movement? If no movement and the wheel spins free and smooth with no noise, you're probably ok.
But nothing beats a visual inspection to be sure. Get yourself a hub nut socket wrench and a Tech Manual (available for free download at willysmjeeps). Easy to take down. You're right, the bearings and races (cones and cups) and the seal are cheap insurance.
Are you moving to P.I. ?
Good luck!

Re: M416: How to determain if I need to replace my bearings
Our most gracious host of this forum, gentleman, scholar, and venerable vendor of MV parts (Mr. Ron Fitzpatrick) has the hub nut socket wrench at https://www.rfjp.com/p-1249-tool-wheel-socket-a692.aspx
I didn't look, but he probably has the seal as well. I'm not sure if the M416 uses the same seal as the M38 and M100 use and I'm pretty sure the M416/M416B1 trailers use different parts, but not positive of that. Measure twice and cut once before ordering. If not, the other venerable MV parts vendors usually have them: Matt @ QTM, George @ AJP, Brent @ BMJP, and John @ MWM, among others....
I have a sister in Moore SC and I'm in the Low Country outside Charleston (Scott Schiller's stomping ground ). There's other jeep nuts up around York and Richburg I'm aware of. You won't be lonely!

Re: M416: How to determain if I need to replace my bearings
Kevin,
On second thought....I own a M100 trailer not the M416, so I'm not positive the hub nut socket wrench is the same size as the one I pointed you at.
That $10 socket wrench for the M38 and M100 hubs is 2-1/16th inch. The M416 might be the same size or not. Sorry for the confusion.
The M416 tech manual is here > http://willysmjeeps.com/downloads/TM_9-2330-251-14.pdf

Yes the M416 Socket wrench is the same as the M100. The bearings and seal are NOT the same however.
The seal is a National #472018
Any O Reilly auto parts store can have them in 24 hours or less.
