I'll try to find a taller nut. That's all there is left. Thanks all.

The washers look incorrect and so does the spring. Coil thickness does not look right and the nut is definitely incorrect. Your lunette is the correct length. Don't cut any threads off or drill unnecessary holes.

I'm going to try making a nut to the length that will fit the space at the end of the shaft by cutting a coupling nut to custom length and using a band saw to cut the castle crown. I'm a genius. I'll post an image when done.

I was going to recommend a machinist (simple vertical mill operation to make a nut) but you seem to have struck on a coupling nut cut-down which will work (much cheaper) than driving around to a machine shop somewhere.
Great expedient thought. :D

Yup. Just like back when everything was done in the field with what you had on hand with good old yankee ingenuity. What a great hobby!

So I've decided to return the MD Juan spring and purchase a NOS spring. The spring is the reason the lunette looked long. The MD Juan spring is only 1 1/2 inchs tall while the NOS spring is 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inch tall.

I knew that spring did not look right! Glad you got it figured out.

The spring has to be 2 3/4 inches tall if you want the cotter pin to fit in the castle nut.
