Tac markings found on my Mite...
I just found tac markings on my mite, it belonged to 3rd Batallion 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton (based in the San Mateo area). Fortunately the competition orange didn't adhere too well to the OD and all I had to do was devote about 3 minutes of powerwashing to the back panel to reveal the original OD.

Tac markings
Could you please post a photo of the Tactical Marking you found, or describe it? Thanks!

Hi, I will ask my buddy, a MGySgt who's been in Motor Transport for almost 30 years in the Corps, for a breakdown on the markings.
Believe it or not, the new markings are even more cryptic. They are alot shorter (example - M11303, M11048, etc...) but nearly impossible for someone not in the Corps to find the meaning of.

Here we go, here's an explanation (or lack thereof) of the latest USMC markings (on Hummers and stuff)... I'll get some stuff on the older markings today. In these ones, I think it's like, for example.
1:FSSG M11650 7 MOTORS 233 49.9 2 2 6 8 151
1st:FSSG
1:FSSG M11650 7 MOTORS 233 49.9 2 2 6 8 151
1st:FSSG
Code: Select all
(7th Motors)
And with a quick google search you can see that 7th Motors is at Camp Pendleton.
As I said I'll get some more info on the older ones later..

Finally figured it out:
The breakdown:
The "35" to the side just indicates that the vehicle was a part of 3rd Batallion 5th Marines.
The "V" tells you that this vehicle, and 3/5, was a part of the Fifth Marine Regiment during Vietnam...
Not sure what the H2 means quite yet but I'm working on it as I type this (I'm multitasking).

Blackdog's Tac Marks
Brian,
I'm almost positive that the H2 stands for 2nd Platoon, Headquarters Co. What's really confusing is that big "V" comboed with 35 or what is being assumed as 3rd Bn, 5th Mar Regt. Since 3rd, Bn 5th Mar Regt. belongs to the 1st Mar Div. The symbol for the 5th Marine Division is a "V" with a spear tip in the lower middle (meanining - tip of the spear). The Fifth Mar Div. when activated consists of 3 Infantry Regiments - 26th Mar, 27 Mar, 28th Mar, and 1 Arty Regt. - 13th Mar. It also has a number of separate and special Battalions and Companies many of which carried the 5th designation - 5th Tank Bn, 5th Combat Engr Bn, 5th Med. Bn, etc. After WWII the 5th Mar Div. was deactivated. However, some of it was reactivated for Vietnam such the famous 26th Mar Regt. which defended Khe Sahn. I believe the 27th Mar. Regt. was activated too, but was never called out/deployed from Camp Pendleton. Both of those Regts were again deactivated after RVN. You'll probably see a whole lot of the 5th Mar Div. portrayed in the new Clint Eastwood movie "Flags of Our Fathers (Iwo Jima).

Re: Tac markings found on my Mite...
I am starting to restore my mite and this is the marking that’s on it now. I started stripping the front marking and found that what looked like a larger marking behind actually appears to be someone taping off around this marking and painting over
It. It appears to be 9th marines 3rd division. Does anyone know
If this marking and color code is correct for a mite. I’ve seen pictures of the 9th marines landing at Danang and it appears their mites are marked with yellow and red divisional style marking.

Re: Tac markings found on my Mite...
Just FYI. All 3 regiments of the 5th MARDIV were activated during Vietnam. The 26th was the first to go to Vietnam. The 27th was mobilized to Vietnam during or shortly after the TET offensive in response to needing more Marines. The 28th (of which I was a member for a short time ((Hotel Co, 2 BN, 28th Marines)) did not go to Vietnam. They were in the San Mateo area as I recall.

Re: Tac markings found on my Mite...
Regarding markings, perhaps someone can help me out with mine. On the front grill assembly, to the right (driver's side) of the air intake, was a "V" symbol, red in color. On the inside of that "V" was a similar "V" that was black. Above the two "V" symbols were the numbers "340" in red. Any ideas???? Other than the "hood" numbers and the USMC designation, this is all I've found on the Mite. And, I have been able to determine that the paint and the markings are all original, it was never modified or repainted.
