Axle Shaft Universal Joints

Post by jgarrett » Thu Nov 10, 2022 8:40 am

First Thank you to all that have posted. This forum has been great as I move along on my A1 project. Does any one have a replacement part number for front universal joints at the differential? Are they the same as the rear u-joints? If replacements are unavailable is there a source for originals? I do not really want to buy an entire axle assembly.

Again thank you for taking the time to share all of your knowledge over the years.

Front half-shaft u-joints are common to all the Mite’s shafts; all are Spicer 1310 series or the Neapco equivalent. Napa can look them up; you have a choice of center grease fittings or a fitting on the caps (which work great for the rear driveshaft). I used the Spicer lifetime-lubed teflon-seal versions on my camping rig with good results over 8 years, but I prefer the greasable joints.

FYI note —> Rear Halfshafts - Spicer long yoke shaft and matching yoke sleeve. It has longer spline travel, no jacking or shock removal need to remove the half-shaft for brake service. These are far larger 1.375" splines and have less vibration & slop than the 60 year old Mite parts. Running these on all 3 of my Mites. May need to clearance the inboard yokes depending on the full extended length of your rear shocks. These parts are available from Summit, but do cost more than NOS 1” shaft units.

yoke shaft 2-82-201X

Your timing on this post was great and thank you for it. Replaced one of the axle u-joints yesterday and wanted to order a couple to have on hand. Thank you!
