Please keep in mind do at your own risk.

First press out plug from end of yoke.
Be careful yoke has been crimped over plug

You can see the ridge around the end of the plug.

You can see the welch plug is much lower profile.

The welch plug machined down around edge to match profile of original plug.

Side by side comparison.

Place gasket sealer on bottom of welch plug to aid in sealing of yoke.

Place welch plug in so edge will slip back under crimp where original plug was and press plug flat.

Touch up with paint.
This is the end result.
Now you can use standard spicer U-joint and no no more contact with plug.

I don't have a picture installed but this is where the yoke mounts.

Awesome work! These are the types of repair "hacks" we really need to share. Thank you for sharing.

I just went through this a couple of weeks ago. Wish your post would have been up then! Where did you obtain the welch plug? I could only find a freeze plug and had to grind that down to lower the profile and fit in the yoke. First time it was to high and rubbed on the yoke. What was the number of the spicer U-joint you used?
Thanks for the post, very well done.
