UPDATE SERIAL # 103 DOD IS 3 OF 59
# 106 DOD IS 5 OF 59
Serial #107 was delivered 5-1-59.

Do either 103 or 106 have a perforated rear bumper or bumperettes on the rear?

If memory serves me right........

#103 and #106 came from Sam Werner.

103 was sitting on a pile of Mites in the field. 106 was in the yard painted blue.

Sam didn't even know he had 103 until I pointed it out to him. I tried to buy it for some time.....

Sam said he had the windshield for 103 under his bed..........it was shorter than the regular one and was one piece glass not two like the production ones.

103 was just a body and frame..no motor and drive train.

I have many photos I shot of both of these and the hood number on 103 was still visible. This vehicle was one of the pre-production test vehicles and I have many in service photos of it.

As said...serial numbers started at 101........this is because there were the MARCO test units that were serial numbered starting at # 1 and this would not confuse the AMC ones with them.

I have been researching Mighty Mites for many years and have (with the help of Tom Price of Bowling Green , Ohio) gone through thousands of USMC photos in the National Archives collecting all that were there on the Mite.

I am assembling a data base of these photos sorted by the USMC (hood) numbers. This will allow me to check to see if there is a photo of any mite that stilll has the original USMC number.

Now that you mention it, I remember seeing the blue #106 in Sam's yard several years ago. I tried to buy it and also tried to buy the one that made the upside-down landing with almost no miles on it, but Sam was determined to keep them at that time. I took several pictures and bought a whole pickup load of parts that day.

Most of the plates were missing when I got the Mite. I'll have to check and see if I have the data plate and get back with you on that. I got the number from the frame rail. I'm doing a very slow restoration (10 years) and hope to finish by the end of the year. It's mostly complete.

That's what happens when you have six other collector vehicles to work on as well.

Nice jab Dave. It was raining this past weekend and I couldn't paint. BTW, I still haven't found what was left of my old data plates yet.

M422's towing pack Howitzers?!!!

David, those are Howtars. The film was taken in front of the reviewing stand at JFK's inauguration. The book American Motors Family Album has a pretty good photo of the Mites towing Howtars, taken at the very same spot.

Here's some info on the Howtar:
