Hello everyone,
I am looking for the Unit Serial Number for the 30th infantry division (117th- 119th and 120th infantry regiments) and for the 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized.
I have already found the number for the 120th Infantry regiment which seems to be 46273.
Thank you for your help

Re: researching Unit Serial Number
Here is a picture of a jerrycan found in the Le Mans area on August 10, 1944 (Unit serial marking 36437) passing the picture in black and white it looks like the bars painted on the M8 of the 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized. On August 10, 1944 the 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance squadron was in action in the same area.
What do you think about it ? Is it possible that this is the right serial unit for 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron ?

What is a unit serial number? Never heard of that. Units do not have serial numbers. Pieces of equipment do.

I believe the proper term is Preparation for Overseas Movement (POM) Markings.

Definitely an underrepresented marking on most jeeps, especially those representing Normandy vehicles.

Re: researching Unit Serial Number
A mission to recreate the most accurate representation of vehicles belonging to the 33rd Signal Construction Battalion, led to years of research in archives around the world and authoring a book that will help other military vehicle owners do the same.
The photo is of a jeep belonging to Co. A, 33rd Signal Construction Battalion. By using Destination: Victory US Army Unit Serial Numbers of the ETO, we are able to to create proper stencils using the correct Unit Serial Number to mark our vehicles just like the original.
A new book by Chad Phillips and Ben Major containing an in-depth look at the history of the ETO Unit Serial Number and POM Markings, as well as 17,000 Unit Serial Numbers, will be released in late Summer 2024.
