A Tank Battalion had tanks, or light tanks, and half tracks. Scout cars were assigned to Cavalry Squadrons which were at Division level. But not for a Tank Battalion. Study the TOE for a WW2 Tank Battalion and Armored Division.

A cavalry recon troop with M8s in an infantry division might have been in proximity to elements of a tank battalion because one of each were normally attached to the division. And armored divisions had a recon squadron and of course, tank battalions. But as said, a tank battalion contained tanks and halftracks (troop carrier, mortar, ambulance). Also 2 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks and jeeps.

Can and Recon units do not want to get anywhere near a line Battalion; too dangerous. They are lightly armored and need to move fast and keep a low profile to survive. I saw little of my own Scout Platoon, and they belonged to me. Sneaky bastards they are. And need to be.
