Best method for uncovering hood markings under layers of paint.

Post by Major Yutyut » Sun Jan 14, 2024 6:18 am

Hi everyone, first post here, I’m new to the forum and all this restoration business.

I recently bought a ‘42 GPW with original engine, and I’m super excited to restore it with my boys. One thing I was wondering is how to take off layers of paint from the hood to see if I can find hood markings?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome aboard!

Wet fine sandpaper and work slow and over a wide area. Don't focus on spot sanding as it's too easy to blast right through any markings there.

Thanks Bill, I’ll try that method this weekend. Any suggestion on grit number to use?

800 or higher. You could also use very dilute aircraft paint stripper. With that method you do a small area (maybe 2" x 2") and only let it sit for a minute or two before flushing it off.

Fine (1200) grit sand paper with water on a hard rubber sanding block.

As already stated go slowly, sometimes literally a single stroke at a time.
I found the numbers on my Ward Lafrance wrecker but it was REALLY touchy as it had been painted numerous times.
Felt like a forensic detective, stroke rinse repeat.
Then stand back a ways, and look at the surface at different angles and different light.
Good luck!
