The Latest US Jeep Now Being Surplussed M1161 Growlers

Post by 70th Division » Mon Aug 19, 2019 11:02 am

Hello,
I remember not too long ago seeing the contract RFQ's being issued for the production
of what sounded like a WW2 spec jeep.
Well the USMC selected the M1161 Growler "Jeep" to basically replace some of their left over, but still used M151 Jeeps.
I actually thought it would have been great to resubmit the Willys MB as the new jeep, as it could have been easily built to meet the specs which were about the same :D :D :D
MD Juan could have really been a prime supplier of frames, bodies, etc.
A new MB would have done the job, maybe a few added on features.
As a matter of fact, I personally think would out perform this thing by a mile !!
Add a Browning 50 to the MB , and a S.A.W to the dash, a jeep trailer, and missile launcher configurations as well. It would have been ....... better in many ways.

It certainly would have been a lot cheaper for the tax payers !!!
The US Government paid a small fortune for each of these jeeps.

Well some are now being sold surplus.

Here is the sales listing here :
These things look brand new, likely the taxpayer being ripped off again, as they seem in good shape, and little used, but are being dumped. They look like a great little jeep !!
They also look like the US Government parks these things in the rain.
You would think just maybe they would mandate that they are stored in doors to protect our Us Taxpayers investments !!

Good Luck !!!!

Best Regards,
Ray

What a deal! Suppose to have cost the military $12,057.00 per unit, but wound up at $209,000.00 each , now you can pick one up for $5,000.

Hello Chuck,

Yea, imagine that, and hardly used !!

A new MB/GPW could have easily been built to meet the specs, and most parts would have been available COTS ..commercial off the shelf !

Look at the WOF/Hotchkiss M201 for a good starting point for "modern" upgrades and armaments.

The French ran beautiful , well equipped M201's, MB and GPW Jeeps up to and well through the 1990's.

Once General Dynamics took this gravy train over, well ........

I saw that they were being sold for about $45,000 on some earlier sales.
But the price should come down as more are being disposed of to the public !

Should be interesting to see the battle to get an on-road title for these!

A few months ago they were bidding in excess of 55K
There's an ITV ammo trailer (many) for sale as well, and if purchasing the unit for a museum, the trailer SHOULD go with it for the $500 asking bid, just so you had the whole rig. Had to add a 2nd vehicle to tow the ammo trailer, 1st one had to tow the mortar, so there was no net savings in size for the rig that couldn't tow ammo and mortar in one chassis.
Plenty of controversy over them on You Tube, previously posted comments.

Wow, I'd never even heard of this until just now. I bet you'd never get a road title for one of them?

Probably wouldn't be a big problem in AZ, I would think. Side by sides and dune buggies are commonly seen driving the roads around town (with legally acquired license plates). I don't see why these would be much different.

Could have remade the M-38A1, with a Kubota Diesel, the M-38A2! Or re-powered the M151 with the same powerplant.

Those Growlers will be like the Mighty Mites, orphans with not much parts support.

All those guys who "just had to have one" bid stupid money on them. Now you see them trying to get their money back on eBay etc. A friend picked up a fairly nice one in January for a tad over 5K.
