Re: NOS M151 Clutch Kit For Sale
From everything I've read on two forums, they're the same for both. Actually, all three; the M151, the M151A1 and the M151A2.

They made the fiber style disc, then the puck style disc, these would be the puck style disc.

And I am told the pressure plate is different, I have not had the the two side by side to compare.

Re: NOS M151 Clutch Kit For Sale
A1 or A2 is not the issue.
its really the pressure plate that may be the difference.
George over in Holland mentioned the potential difference between the two styles of pressure
Personally his info was after I had installed new clutch kits with fibre disks in two A2:
There is no sign of slippage Only time will tell.
Thats what I know , for what it worth.

Re: NOS M151 Clutch Kit For Sale
The A2 puck style clutch will work but it is very aggressive so if you have never driven one or a race type clutch in a car then you will find they are pretty much in or out. You have to have a very light touch on the clutch and they will still tend to chatter. They also tear up a flywheel big time. Don't get me wrong, they are usable but if you have driven the vehicle with a fiber clutch for a while then it is going to be a learning curve to get used to a puck clutch. And if you run a lot of parades you will curse the day you ever put a puck clutch in! The easiest way to describe them is that they are designed not to slip, they are very good at that including when you are starting out.

Re: NOS M151 Clutch Kit For Sale
Hi All, newcomer to the forum. I am restoring a 1969 M151A2 and mine has the puck style in it. I just got he trans off this week and putting the motor on the rack this weekend to start the engine work. Would like to know if you still have your clutch assembly?
Also, my data plate has the VIN number on it, of course, but in the 7th thru the 11th place of the VIN it has the word "PROTO". I assume that means Prototype, but how would i find any information on it? Thanks

That is a data plate we would all like to see a picture of along with the vehicle. Technically the A2 was not issued until 1970. When it was actually made is still up in the air. I know Ken the Muttguru would be very interested in this one. This should be a Ford built unit so look over the valve cover on the body cowl for the Budd tag welded to the body. There are two sets of numbers on it ant that will let ken tell you what you have. I can tell you right now he is going to want to see a picture of it so they might make things move quicker if you have it.

Re: NOS M151 Clutch Kit For Sale
1. Do you still have a kit for sale?
2. In regards to when M-151A2 production started, I think I can narrow it down some. I have a 245 page test report of the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command dated 14 July 1969. it is titled "Final Reports on Product Improvement Test of Truck, l/4-Ton, M-151 Series w/Modified Independent Rear Suspension
(MIRS) System, USATECOM Project Nos. 1-7-4030-25/3." The project testing was initiated in June 1968.
The background notes state "Modified independent rear suspension (MIRS) system featuring trailing arms in place of lateral suspension arms was developed for the M151 series trucks to reduce the incidence of overturning accidents "by minimizing over-steer and jack-up of the vehicle in sharp or high speed turns and increasing body roll to improve driver "feel".
"Tests on the modified independent rear suspension system and 35 other product improvements including such items as two-speed windshield wipers, one-piece windshield, fuel pump, class "A" headlights, deep dish steering wheel, etc., were initiated by request of the Project Manager, General Purpose Vehicles, reference la. Testing was accomplished at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) and US Army Armor & Engineer Board (USAARENBD) in conformance with the procedures and plans outlined in references la and lb. Suitability for air drop of the M151A1 and ML51A1C was evaluated at the U.S. Army Airborne, Electronics and Special Warfare Board (USAE&SWBD)".
Three M151 series vehicles were received at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland for test under this program. They were truck, utility, M151A1, USA Reg. No. 02C90868, 02C41168 and 02C42668 truck, ambulance, M718, USA Reg. No. 02C92468; and truck, utility, M151A1C weapons carrier, 02C93068.
Standard M-151A1, USA Reg. No. 02C90568 was used as a comparison vehicle.
All this being said, The date of the test report (14 Jul 69) is a start point in that no prodection M-151A2's exist before that. With a completed report, the Army would have to modify the current contract with Ford to change from M-151A1's to M-151A2's. That does not happen overnight. With a new fiscal year starting 1 Oct 69 (FY70 goes from 1 Oct 69 to 30 Sep 70) I cannot imagine an M-151A2 production vehicle before Sep 69. Food for thought. Kevin.
