Magneto coil dilemma

Post by gg656 » Sat Jan 14, 2023 7:19 am

I have two mule magnetos and each coil has secondary to secondary resistance of 11.4k but is open from each secondary to ground (armature). Strange thing is one was running before last shut down 20 years ago. But no spark now.

Now I just bought a new Q2477C coil and I check the resistances and find sec to sec of 16.8k, but both secondaries are open to ground!

Somewhere I read the typical sec resistance is 5500 to 6500 ohms. Makes sense, two windings with a common ground. But why is the new one open, could there be something I don't know about that coil? Anybody have any experience with those coils.

FYI, it looks like the QT2477C and the Q2477C have the same National Stock Number.
Thanks.

I would recommend that you call John Emery and see what he has to say, I think he rebuilds, or has someone rebuild, mags for him. (262) 567-5606
