Safety First (finally!)

Post by Chuck W. » Mon Aug 30, 2021 11:50 am

Since I got my lift, I have been using a couple of 2 x 10's to hold the jack stands when I needed to support the mule. After a couple of, well, near misses, I finally built a couple of safer brackets to hold the stands at the front and rear. Should have done this a long time ago!

I also gave my jack stands a good cleaning, inspection and paint.

Gave the new jack stand holders a try out today, finally getting around to fixing some pesky oil leaks on poor Eeyore's front axle! Works great, the 2 x 10's are officially retired!

It's a Harbor Freight scissor lift that I modified by installing removable wheel platforms.

Chuck I can see why you made the mod for the jack stands.
Mules don’t exactly have great lifting points on the axles!

Yeah, it really gets shaky when you have an outer axle housing off!

Well, I finally decided to pull the trigger.
I didn’t realize (guess I didn’t really look), that companies actually make an ATV / Motorcycle lift. Thanks to my son for the tip!
For the last few months I’ve been searching and researching lifts. There are a vast array of places out there to find these, although most are offshore.
Patience has paid off and I found this beauty close to home courtesy of a fellow that just retired and closed up his shop. Advertised just this week, deals never come at the best times but we need to jump on things when the opportunity presents itself.
This is a 1500lb Made in America bike hoist. I got it complete with all the options, many of which I [attachmmay never use.
The price was right as these sell for $4k plus here in Canada.
$1250 Canadian dollars (about $1k USD) I think I did alright
Should aid in servicing and maintaining my three mule fleet

Looks like you got a deal! Now you need a rolling high chair! I think you are going to be very happy. I'd just recommend that you tie it down with a couple of ratchet straps (trust me!).

Well Chuck it’s high enough to stand and work (48” lift) or lower it and grab a chair. It also features a rear wheel drop out for bikes which may come in handy if working on the engine.
Yes, Although the lift is pretty stable, I will be placing concrete anchors into the floor at the pivot end.
I do agree that the mule itself will require some fastening for safety, especially once wheels are off.
I’m going to look at it and maybe try to figure out some sort of frame jack / clamp set up that can fasten to the table. Maybe a saddle type arrangement for the axles to sit in or even something to attach to the frame tubes.
