Post by frank1669 » Fri Sep 04, 2020 7:48 pm

I searched the Forum and found the air filter number Puralator A25306, Eternal Fuel filter is Wix 33034 Are these Correct? Also does anyone know the part numbers for the in the tank fuel filter and the engine oil filter? I am leaving in a few day to pick up my new to me mule, It has not run in 10 years so I want to change all the fluids and filters. Hoping to get the parts at a NAPA or O,riellys. Thanks

I think the Purolator A25306 needs a modification to work in the mule, see viewtopic.php?f=148&t=264977
The WIX 33034 will work for the fuel bowl, but make sure there are no old seals stuck to the filter base. See viewtopic.php?f=148&t=205307
I have been told that the WIX 51514 will fit in the engine oil can, but you must use the original seal, plus this is really a hydraulic filter. I have never tried it. You might be better off ordering the correct filter with the correct seal from John Emery.
I don't know of any substitutes for the paper in-tank filter on the pickup tube. John Emery or Charles Witt might have a few, they are hard to find.

There is link to where some folks were trying to get a standard filter to fit the in tank mechanism. Here is link to what they were doing. viewtopic.php?f=79&t=183466&hilit=fuel+filter. Does anyone have the dimensions of the spacer ring? I would like to chuck some aluminium in my lathe and make one.

I had totally forgot about that! As a follow-up, I never did anything with the slip-on filter setup I was playing around with. One of the members here sent me one of his machined adapters and I just used it along with the WIX 33271 filter, worked great. Later sold that mule with the filter/spacer setup. I stumbled across 5-6 of the paper elements at a flea market, NOS in the box, and am keeping them to support my current mule.

I also remember Bill Watson or John Emery telling me that the spun glass filters that were used in the M38 gas tanks were the same diameter, just too long. He was cutting them down to work in the mule fuel tank. I don't have an M38 filter to check the diameter.
Mike, I will measure one of the new filters that I have and if you have the WIX 33271 elements, you can figure out how long the spacer needs to be.

Well, as it turns out, I found all three type filters in my spare parts.
Here's the paper elements I have, and I know they fit because I have used two of them so far: Image

Here's one of the spun-glass filters next to a paper filter. Don't know who gave me this, maybe John.

And here's all three; paper element, spun-glass element and the WIX 33271.
Image

The dimensions of the paper element are: OD - 2-3/8"; ID 1-5/8"; length 3-7/8".
Spun-glass element is basically the same thing, OD is smaller at 2".
The WIX 33271 is 1/2" shorter, so your spacer would need to be 1/2" long x 1-5/8" ID

NOTE: After looking at TM 9-2320-246-20, the spun-glass filter may actually be the original style and perhaps the paper element was a replacement? My paper elements are all dated Feb-1972. My FSN x-reference does not list a 2910-955-2010!

FWIW:
After sleeping on it, I thought I'd check TM 9-2320-246-20(P) (12/69), and the 2910-955-2010 FSN is correct. However, I still feel that maybe the paper element is a later direct replacement for the spun filter. Looking for a MWO for it. I have probably opened 20+ tanks and they usually have the paper element, or no element at all. I don't recall ever finding the spun element in one.

I made an error in the filter measurements, paper element OD is 2-3/16", NOT 2-3/8"
