M 274 mule

Post by lawrencepk » Mon Aug 10, 2020 12:45 pm

I just bought a 274A5 but the data plates are gone. On the sides it is stenciled USMC 369675. I found no numbers on the platform. On the front plate it is stamped Truck, Platform, Utility 1/2 ton 4x4 M274A5 Plate no. 11592143. Who made this and
what year?

Your mule is one of the second series M274-A5's, built by Brunswick Corp. in August, 1969 under contract DAAED7-68-C-1572. Based on your 369675 registration number, the Brunswick Corp serial number is most likely 195. John Emery at Emery Mule Supply has the correct reproduction Brunswick Corp. data plate (262)567-5606.

34079 Lusterless Forest Green. Registration numbers on the side of the deck would be yellow. Unless you want to get really fancy and go with the 3-color cammo with flat black lettering, see TB 43-0209. Either one would be correct. Also, Rick Larson has the correct stencil and reflector set for your USMC mule: https://www.militarystencils.com/Decal- ... s-C32.aspx

One more question. What is the correct battery box?

The only "correct" military battery box was part of the electrical kit that included the wide fenders and tires, Prestolite starter and Chrysler alternator. The battery box was built into the right fender.

In the standard civilian electric starter conversion, most people use an under-bed mounted battery. I use to make two different type under-bed battery holders, but I don't make them any more. I think John Emery sells a similar battery box.
