Help installing governor cover. Return spring issue

Post by RAS1 » Thu May 07, 2020 9:30 pm

Hi
I am trying to install the governor cover as I like the original look. (I know people think they are a pain)

My problem is I have a throttle return spring hooked to the rear of the bed, connecting to the govenor. This prevents the cover from being installed.

I have had other mules with the same spring installed, is this spring an after thought? Or installed in the wrong posistion? Or is it installed because something isn't functioning properly in my throttle system?

That spring is incorrect. The return spring is on the throttle cable under the bed, item #14 below.

Just to make it clear, there are two throttle return springs, the one around the cable under the deck as shown in the above post, and the one at the governor. The one under the deck is usually rusted and broken and that's usually why people add an extra spring like you have. I buy compression spring stock from McMaster-Carr and cut it to the length I need.

Can someone take a photo of the 2nd spring under the bed? I am building from the ground up and its hard to tell by the manual just exactly where that spring under bed lives. ………………...Thank you

I looked through my photos and I don't have anything showing the under-bed throttle return spring, and my mule is not where I can photograph it for you. Hopefully, somebody will post a photo for you. If you follow your throttle cable from the pedal, through the front cross-member back to where it passes through the first bed support cross-member, the return spring was located around the throttle cable behind that bed support. You may even find the remains of the spring and the clamp that goes around the cable. Hope this helps.

Just as a cap to the question I started, i pulled the "extra" spring off the govenor. It still had the spring under the seat and through throttle cable. Works fine, without the extra spring. Not sure why it was even installed. Got my governor cover installed. It looks great.
