M274 4 cylinder push rod tube spring compressor

Post by bms07 » Sat Apr 27, 2019 6:11 pm

What is the best tool to use to compress the push rod tube spring? There is a special tool in the manuals. Does any body have one? Or what have you used?
Thanks Brad

I used a tool that I could compress the valve spring, then R&R the valve seal, now this was civilian car, m151? I don't know if it would work on a mule.
To keep the valve from falling into the cylinder, I either used air or I stuffed a rag into the cylinder

Feeding about 10 feet of 1/4 inch nylon rope down in a spark plug hole and then slowly bar the over until it pushes the rope up against the head of the valve works very well. That's the preferred method of holding a valve in place in order to ream the valve guides when a cylinder is on the engine according to the Lycoming Aircraft Engine service bulletin. I have done that procedure many times.

I need that tool, Austringer! My knuckles are torn up from trying to get the push rod tubes in place. I would be willing to buy it from you, or borrow it, and return it. Where did you find it?

I borrowed this tool from John Emery. Its the only tool he has. It worked great. Its a briggs and Stratton N0 19063 valve spring compressor. Bought one from Amazon for under 20.00
