Handrail bolt size?

Post by Jenjr9899 » Wed Jan 02, 2019 3:47 pm

I was taking the handrails off to do some painting on my Mule and one of the handrail bolts snapped off. I drilled out the remainder that was still in the deck nut. What size bolts are these and what size tap as well I will need to retap the deck nut. Are these something that can be found at the local hardware store?

Thanks,
Jimmy

The Hand Rail Bolts are 3/8-24 x 1-1/4" long. The tape drill for 3/8-24 thread is letter size Q and is 0.3320 if you do not have letter drills then 21/64 = 0.3281

The square nut is held in with an external tooth lock washer and is not a standard size square nut. Do not try to drive out the nut without removing the lock washer because you generally brake off the bracket that is welded to the bed.

If all else fails drill out the nut to 3/8" and use a longer bolt with a washer large enough to cover the bracket then use a nut and lock washer. Hope it is an area that is easy to get to the back side.

3/8"x24. Standard bolt size, but if you want the original type with the recessed head and intergral star washer, check this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/40-NOS-MILITAR ... :rk:8:pf:0
