This is what I find interesting about those photos. The TOW system was introduced in 1970, but look carefully at that mule, it's a very early first series M274 dating from 1956/57! Why would you put your newest weapons system on a crotchety old 4-cylinder mule?

Re: TOW Mule Pictures
Chuck,
I noticed the same thing i.e. 4 Cyl. The Training Circular TC 23-23 dated 9 July 1970 has examples of the TOW installed in earlier model Jeeps M151's and not M151A2 also. Just a thought is, the Research & Development Centers even back then would have older equipment and not the latest. The Division I was in back then did get new fielded equipment and was one of the first to receive TOW to replace 106mm RR. The attached pic is from a fellow Paratrooper with one of their TOW Mules time frame 1971-72-73. At a recent display of my Mule/RR setup I was told some units still had 4 Cyl mules into late 70's. I can't prove that, but one thing I do know about the U.S. Army when you think something is gone out of the system, someone will show up and tell you "not in their unit". Example: I was in Florida in the late 80's working with a National Guard unit and darn if they didn't still have a mule being used on the flight line. I thought they were long gone by early 80's.
