Leonard Grove Starter
Anyone ever removed their Leonard Grove starter? Mine recently failed - probably a sheared roll pin, but when I went to remove it, there is insufficient clearance between the rear of the starter (with extension) and the platform mounting bulkhead.
I am going to try and take out the allen screws that hold the starter motor to the modified original pull starter housing to see if I can get enough wiggle room to get the starter out. Otherwise, I am looking at having to tilt the platform at a minimum.....so a 15 minute job gets much more complicated.....

Re: Leonard Grove Starter
Using a lot of finesse and the tire removed and fuel lines out of the way the starter will come loose and out as a complete unit. The ford motor will be difficult to remove from the starter with it mounted in the mule especially if it has been together for years.
When Tom and I started in 1974 adding electric start to the mule we used this setup. It used the long shank Ford starter motor machined to fit inside the manual starter. Usually the roll pin on the starter gear attached to the Ford starter shaft failed. The torque of this setup also caused the mule starter bendix to fail.
We switched to modifying the VW starter.
Then switched to the Gear Driven starter.
Now I use the original starter the military used for their converted A5s.
Contact me as I have both the Gear Driven, VW and original starters in stock. I have a couple of the Ford Motor starters but they are parts only and I would not repair and use. If you need parts contact me. The Ford Motor is easily repairable by any starter shop.

Re: Leonard Grove Starter
Thank you for the reply and sorry for the slow response - missed the post.
I managed to finagle it out this weekend. It was a bear, but I wiggled and tried not to curse and managed to free it.
Nice job on the design - very clever use of the original starter and the Ford motor fit in quite nicely. Mine was hanging up because the nylon gear (kinda) on the motor side of the original starter is deforming a little, presumably from the torque of the motor, and sticks. I freed it up and the starter works again, although not reliably enough to put it back in.
While I was trying to figure out how to remove this starter, I did get a replacement original. Easy in and out and definitely works great.
As an aside, I had not run the Mule in about a month because of the starter - in the meantime, those darn mice made another nest in the shroud. It smelled on startup and I had to blow it all out. Pesky little guys and certainly hard on the cooling if you don't catch it.
Thanks again!

I decided to take the mule instead of the jeep to the Sam Werner Museum show. Just before I loaded the mule on the trailer, I decided to pull the shroud and check. Didn't expect to find anything, only been a few months since I checked, but sure enough, there was a small nest started! You can't check too often! (also found a nest in the glove box on the M-38: need a cat!)in the meantime, those darn mice made another nest in the shroud.

Cat's help. They are funny though. One likes to specialize in catching and eating squirrels and the other just mice. Of course they have to display their catch back home.

I thought the neighborhood cat would help....until I caught him pissing on my seats! He's locked out of the shop now!

I am not much of a cat fan, but I may have to change my ways.....
I am fighting a general wildlife infestation - squirrels in my eaves, pigeons in the barn, darn barn swallows trying to build nests on the windows on my house and mice in my Mule. It is a full time job to go after the critters.....

I've been fighting chipmunks. I found that I can bait them onto the top of a brick wall with sun flower seeds, when they stop to eat, I bust there little asses with my pellet rifle. I've killed 7-8 so far. Had one run out the other day, wearing a little red sweater with an A on it, busted his ass, too!

I have been having fun with .22 shorts on the squirrels, .22 rat shot on the pigeons in the barn (no holes in the roof) and I guess the mice are currently winning.
I have a darn groundhog problem too, but my kids keep granting them clemency on account of them being "too cute". Hmmmmm....
