Thanks, Chuck! I stumbled across this document today. Nothing new here other than maybe some interesting history about testing the AO42 engine for use in a mule.

Cheers!

Thanks, Bruce. That is a very interesting document, the evaluation of the AO42 engine as a replacement for the AO53. I like the conclusions!

The evaluation mentions that a magneto failed on the AO42 engine during the test... then a modified AO53 magneto was used to complete the test. Any idea what modifications were made to the 4 cylinder mag to make it work on the 2 cylinder motor?

That WOULD be interesting to know! From what little work I have done on the 4-cylinder magneto, I would think it would have been a job to make it work, as the 4-cylinder appears to have an external impulse unit and a tang drive instead of a gear drive. I think it rotates in the opposite direction, if that would even matter.
On the other hand, it may have been as simple as making a different drive gear adapter, since the case and mounting appear to be the same size!

Interesting indeed! Since the 2 cylinder mags are becoming harder and harder to find, modifying 4 cylinder mags to fit on 2 cylinder motors might be of some benefit.

Well, one major problem with the 4-cylinder mag is that the plug wires come out the top of the cap, not the side, just like the 2-cylinder gen set mag, so you'd still need to figure out how to get the wires through the shrouds and down to the plugs. In that case, you might as well use the 2-cylinder gen set mags :D

Good info, Chuck. Thanks! I believe I could sit around discussing mule stuff all day. At any rate... I've stumbled across a source for the 4 cylinder Slick magnetos, NOS. Maybe some other folks know about it? Info follows:

Rudy Calin rudy@rebuiltmags.com
http://www.rebuiltmags.com/
651-233-6655.

He wants $250 per mag.

Bruce
PS. I have no affiliation with Rudy or his business. Just happened to stumble across his web site and asked him about the electronic ignition magnetos. He seemed quite familiar with mule magnetos.
