My alternator belt is different than my original fan belt( smooth vs serrated. Will it work?? And fatter.

It seems to run alright, but now the engine sounds underpowered, not getting up to speed, with a labored chunking sound. It ran fine before the alternator installation. Could be the tightness of the belt or what ? I took the fuel filter off to see if it somehow gotngunked. I clueless.
