Paint

Post by fiwi463pfa » Mon May 16, 2022 8:58 am

When repainting an MB, what do you prefer?

Shiny paint, usually referred to as 'Mix' or rather matte paint?

Does anyone have a preferred supplier in FR / BEL / NL ?
I heard that STAMAN in NL has good paint, but only matte as it appears on the site.

MBs, GPWs (and other WWII military vehicles) should be lusterless (matte). Reflections off of glossy paint makes the vehicles way too visible to enemy fire.

Hi,

Both ours are OD with 10% sheen” from Dallas in Newbury U.K.

We like the colour and the slight sheen stops greasy finger marks showing up.

I know people who have the lustreless finish and end up wiping it down with WD-40, which gives it a sheen!!!😮

Most European dealers carry the 'Mat 1' paint, including Staman. My jeep is heading towards a re-paint and this is most likely the one I'll use too.

Hello,

The paint used is an interesting decision.
The common paint 33070 in my opinion looks good, but tends to not have strong UV ultra violet resistance .
It seems to get a faded or chalky look after outdoor exposure over time.
Many people use it, and are happy with it.

Painting your jeep takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention expense.

I am restoring a GPW now, and I am using 2430 paint by Gillespie.
This paint does have good UV properties, holds up well after years in the sun and weather.
It is a "semi gloss" paint, but the gloss disappears nicely.
The olive drab that it is, is a beautiful shade, and long lasting.
If when your vehicle is complete, and you paint is cured, you can also rub some old motor oil to it and the very slight gloss is instantly eliminated.

I love this paint, as it holds up, doesn't absorb oil, finger prints, etc. and is washable.

The paint can is labeled as 1944-1957, so a lot of research has been done.

I have seen on my vehicles, that a 1941 Dodge WC-12 , has an original shade of paint that matches very closely the 2430 shade, as it is darker shade than 33070 by a large margin.
Also , the original paint on my January, 1942 Slat grill is a close match to this paint, darker than 33070.

Thus, I am convinced and will use it on all my WW2 vehicles because it is a durable and lasting paint, that will not fade or get chalky.

Here are a few pictures of parts painted with the 2430 late war paint.

Resized_20210427_094503.jpeg
I recommend it, and again will use it on all my WW2 Vehicles like Jeeps, Command Car, and GMC, etc !!

Very little actual gloss, and a nice long lasting paint job !!

Good Luck !!!

Best Regards,
Ray

Sounds like excellent paint, but I've never seen it for sale in Europe; shipping it over from the US might be possible but will be expensive I guess. Still, worth looking for.

Hello David,

Yes it might not be too bad to ship, but these days everything is higher and screwed up.

There may be a European equivalent available ?

I really, really, like this paint and it looks very nice.
It holds up very well exposed to the elements.

I painted a test section 12 or more years ago, on a jeep, and it still looks good, and wasn't garage kept.

Best Regards,
Ray

My GPW in absolutely flat MAT1, compare the paint to an NOS rear light cover...

As I said in your other post on paint, MAT1 is sold by a lot of MV dealers all over the EU. I would start by checking if your closest parts dealer stocks it. If not, Staman, Jemax etc. :D

Ok thanks, I searched on dealers sites and everyone of them has their own mat1. Also some of them has variant for 41-42 year and different lne for 43-45. Are You sure these paint are exactly the same paint everywhere? Why there is no the same label on cans but each of them has their own label? I am afraid that I will buy paint from one dealer and it will not looks like I want. Thats why I am asking where Johan bought his paint because I want to get the same finał results of colour.

The paint is the same colour but the exact shade will be a bit different with every separate batch, just like it was originally. So even if you order the same paint from the same place as Johan, the colour will be the same but the exact shade will most likely be a little bit different. However, this will hardly be noticeable even when your jeeps are parked next to each other. When you get your paint, make sure all tins have the same batch number.

My jeep is heading towards a repaint, and I will go with MAT1.
