MB451252 DoD 6-29-45 Restoration
I bought this Jeep 10 years ago from a guy in PA, apparently it was used at one time to plow snow. It was brought back to VA and I tinkered with it here and there and collected some parts. Now I have moved to a new location in FL and actually have a garage. I feel like after 10 years of tinkering I'm seriously ready to start on this project.
Unfortunately I found out just a couple days ago that the frame is unusable. That is abit of a monkey wrench, but my plan is to find a MB frame that will work for this project. The wheels and engine are from a CJ. I figure in the mean time while I wait for a frame to pop up I will disassemble the CJ engine and see if I can get it moving as it is completely seized.
CJ block markings:
J261719
CJ Head markings:
12-8
640161
I also have a MB engine that I picked up at some point. I believe is within range for this Jeeps serial number. Can anyone confirm that? Unfortunately at this point it is also seized up. Hopefully the CJ engine will act as good practice so I can tackle this one next.
MB block markings:
MB-560525
2-16
638632 W5 A NI-OR
MB head markings:
2-28
640161

T84J-1A transmission rebuilt.
WG Div 16

No date stamp on the case lip. Does that mean it's a reproduction case? I'm not sure what that means. Can some shed some light on that?

Head on mb engine is cj. mb block casting date is feb 16, serial number is a 1945 number, in the scheme of things the engine is too early, however, not all engines got in their jeep in order so there will be no issue in using this engine, head you find should be close to 2-16 too, with willys and jeep embossed on it.

@Seeker81,
According to Jim Kilbourne jeep with s/n 451394 dated from 45-6-28 would have an engine s/n 619904 (delta =168510)
The delta between frame @ and engine # looks correct if I compare with the following jeep data.
Your engine is not far from the correct s/n
Yves

Hello,
That is a great looking
jeep project !!
Congratulations !!
What is the date if delivery in your dataplate ?
Is it an August jeep ?
I am thinking that you " might" have had a Ford marked hood on the jeep, as I believe at this point many late 45 MBs had started getting Fird parts added to the production line.
Ford sent parts to them towards the end of their own production.
Look for an F mark stamped on the hood hinge.
You might have your original USA number on the hood as well , if it wasn't sanded off, as it looks like there are multi layers of paint on the jeep.
That MB engine you have will be a great engine to rebuild.
It will be a nice thing to save another WW2 Jeep from oblivion, and get her restored
Best Regards,
Ray

I suppose my engine is close enough unless someone is willing to make a trade.YLG80 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 6:20 amHi Adam,

CJ engine progress. Looks mighty rusty inside. The head is stuck. Heading out to get some 1 inch wood stock to make shims to help take the head off hopefully, a stud extractor and probably some wire wheels or stripping wheels.

Another monkey Wrench. Rear differential marked GP on the upper right side. Internals look fantastic to me but also marked GP on internals.
Front axle also marked GP. Pictures tomorrow.

Nothing at all wrong with that, So they are ford, GPW parts say gp, And from their configuration they are for a gpw, or MB. not a GP
find a date code on the ring gear. see if its 1945 some time, and gpw marked.
dont mix up the parts if you pull the ring carrier out, i dont really see any traces of oil, what do the teeth cotact areas
look like? does it turn?

Yeah, I was just hoping the housings would be MB housings. I'll take a look at the ring tomorrow if I have a chance.Adam wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 12:28 pmNothing at all wrong with that, So they are ford, GPW parts say gp, And from their configuration they are for a gpw, or MB. not a GP

I do not see a F mark on the hood latch.
That is a Ford hood.
Take a look at the hinge, there should be an "F" stamped on the hinge, under the paint layers.
It is a small F and located to the left of the second bolt hole from the driver's side of the hinge when installed.
A little closer to the second hole than the third.
Here is a pic if my hood hinge on an August 1942 GPW. You should have a nice easy repair to fix the broken hinge sections.
They weld up nicely !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: MB451252 DoD 6-29-45 Restoration
Just to clarify the previous post about the hood, yes your hood should have an F stamp on it. However, it was not made by Ford. Ford, Willys, and ORD came together and developed the ACMII body which featured the best of the Ford made bodies and the ACM produced "MB" bodies. This also included the hood. The Ford hood design was used and ACM took over the production of them. The F stamp was left in the tooling given to ACM by Ford. So your 45 MB has an ACM produced F marked hood. Sorry I just want to make sure incorrect information isn't being spread.
