Incorrect USA number on Ford GPW

Post by cdarrow » Wed Sep 08, 2021 9:51 am

Hi all,

Have had this Jeep for about 2 years. What’s been bugging me is the USA number is incorrect for the year (GPW is Oct 42, SN.723XX). I’m not the one who restored it, I bought it from the guy who did. Any ideas of how I could change the number on it without looking terrible? I have the matching paint but am worried it won’t completely match.

Thanks all.

Just a comment concerning USA numbers. My MB - given to me by a Battle of the Bulge First Sergeant - has an "unusual" number on it.

I asked him about it. He told me that it was his service number. It will stay that way. Just another reason to talk about "Bud".

That’s awesome. I would do the same in that case.

This is more of just a random number.

I think you are trying to be to neat and perfect about it. Sometimes the white hood numbers were put right over the blue drab factory applied numbers. Other times they sprayed OD over the factory numbers and then applied the white. The OD applied in a motorpool could have been a slightly different shade. While this is not your exact situation I think simply spraying OD over your white numbers and then reapplying a new set would look just fine. In my opinion the OD potentially not matching perfectly makes it more true to what the jeeps actually looked like. Jeeps have been found with multiple sets of white hood numbers being applied. Guys that do "motorpool" restoration tend to talk down about the perfect "factory" restored jeeps all while having an over restored Jeep themselves.

I found my hood number in white on three different layers. (Top layer was unmarked.) Once I satisfied myself that I'd identified all of the digits correctly I hit the area of the hood that I'd stripped and applied the numbers.
