Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
Still slowly going over the tub. It appears that these hat channels were not installed correctly? The channel is clipping the corner of the sump space and it won’t fit in? Thought?

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
I just checked an ACM type I body and a picture I have of an ACM II body. The flange on the hatchannel passes by the very corner of the sump hole, missing covering it by maybe a 1/2" or less. It does not intrude on the opening.

Jeff, Thanks! These seem a little wide.....have to go back and look at the Ford drawings, maybe these were homemade...nonetheless they are going to have to come off

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if they were original wouldn't they have mounting holes drilled for the body bolts to pass through?
Been a while since I had the body off my jeep.

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
Good catch! And yes, they do look wide in the picture.
I have to check, but I have a new set of reproduction hat channels that I think are for an ACM type II tub, but I'm working on an ACM type I tub. If it's too much work for me to use what I have here they may be available; and selling them would help offset the cost of the type I need. I'll check tomorrow if you're interested.

Yeah I am pretty sure they are replaced...should be an interesting first go on the tub.

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
They're not original. Where they veer off at an angle, there is a weld bead where the channel was cut, angled and welded. Factory channels were pressed as one piece with the die having the complete angled channel shape, with a slightly 'softer' bend.

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
Next major body problem is the driver side panels. The tops seems fine, but below the axe recess it has been reworked severely. Perhaps buy the repro sections and weld them in? Going to need to think about this one a bit and or figure out what is happening underneath some of that Bondo. I really appreciate everyones help and replies.

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
I see some extra pop rivet holes in there too. It's never as easy as it seems!
And to make matters worse, I'm smarter than I thought....I bought the correct hat channel set for my GPW. Sorry to raise your hopes. And to make matters even worse, Ron is out of them right now https://www.vintagejeeps.com/p-2161-hat ... acm-2.aspx

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
Hello Neal,
Yes those channels look like the majority of the were tacked on and home made.
Not too hard to replace them.
Once you get a new set, what I do is to cut a little V notch where the pre drilled hole is that they add to them. That way once you get the new channel tight to the floor, you can weld the V notch , and make a good weld between the hat channel and the floor. Fill in tye notch with weld, then grind back the area. Once done you can actually hide the repair.
As for the side panel, get that bondo chipped away to see how much original panel is under there.
It can easily be patched with steel patches, and welded in smoothly.
Maybe post a picture from the inside as well. That will show what what is there, and what needs to be done.
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
I have finally had some time to get back working on the tub. The under side hat channels were replaced at some point, but they were the wrong size and full of bondo, so I am slowly working on removing them. Are brown napkins standard issue for hat channels

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
I was able to pick up a T84 for the jeep for a really good price. Certainly going to need a rebuild, but I think it has some good bones. Slightly worried about a broken section in the case where one of the shafts runs. It doesn't appear that it would cause to much of a problem, what do you guys think? Anyone recognize any of the marking on the casting? It was built in January 1944 but is also marked "rebuilt." You can see that section that broke off at some point in the last photo in the upper part of the case....

Re: Neal's GPW Restoration
Apart from the broken tooth on the input shaft gear, the box looks O.K. Possibly just needs the rust cleaned off the gears. Of course, the cluster gear might have been damaged by the missing tooth on the input gear nicking it.
The broken off bit near the first/reverse shifter rail won't have any bad effects. There is no strain vertically on those shafts, just sliding back and forth. In fact, it will probably allow a bit more oil to lubricate the shaft.
