Jeep markings for the 31241413 time

Post by iRONM4N » Fri Dec 11, 2020 4:09 am

Hello there jeep owners!

We are currently working on a Cj to konwert it to a ww2 style jeep.( ETO 1944 Normandy timeline ) Ignore the 101-st markings on it The biggest problem is the markings....
Our jeep will have a BC620 radio on it. We are from Hungary so its hard to search any usefull information.
Our divison will be 1st Infantry Division 18th Infantry regiment. The serial number will have an S beacuse it has a radio.

The question is the bumper! Witch is correct?
1—18-I—A—7 7th vehicle, Co A, 18th Inf, 1st Inf Div.
Or because it has a radio on it it must be attached to the signal corps?
1—X—1S—7 7th vehicle, 1st Sig Co, 1st Inf Div.

We like to use it as a recon/scout jeep

According to the book on ‘US Army Vehicle Markings 1944,’ if you wish to mark your vehicle as assigned to a Intel/Recon platoon it is part of the 18th Regiment Headquarters Company. For that the markings would be:

1-18- I On the left side
HQ-7 (pick a vehicle number) on the right side

The Regimental Headquarters has a total of 23 vehicles and trailers assigned according to the TOE. Of those, 4 are assigned to the Intel/Recon platoon, and likely the last numbers of the vehicles assigned, as part of the “train” of Regiment Headquarter vehicles. So, vehicles 20-23?

It would be practical for a Intel/Recon assigned jeep to have a radio, so it would not necessarily have to be a Signal Company vehicle. If I had to pick, it would be vehicle HQ-20, as that would be the Scout Platoon Headquarters vehicle and the one most likely to have a radio installed.

The Cavalry/Recon troop is actually assigned to the Division Headquarters, so it would not be part of the 18th Regiment, but part of the Division Headquarters.

The book ‘U.S. Army Vehicle Markings 1944’ is available on Kindle through Amazon.

Hope this helps.
