Rebuilding my grand fathers Jeep.

Post by Deja vu » Sun Aug 09, 2020 7:24 pm

My grandfather bought a Jeep a few years after returning from the war. The frame is in excellent shape. The engine is in decent shape but the body has lost all the paint and has a fair amount of rust on it.

What I am looking for is possible hood numbers

The frame number is 222183
The engine block number is 222488
The number of the glove box is 2(2or3)0769 not sure of the second number as there is a rust spot there.

It also had a lot of electronics in it (possible radio equipment?) It’s not there now but my dad remembers it having the electronics.

Any help you can give me would be great, I kinda have a hard time with magic like google.

Thanks!

I’ll do that after work, it’s a GPW by the way. I think the reason the frame and the engine are in good shape are that they where stored in a shed while the body has been exposed the the elements

I think these are some older pictures of when I picked it up.

Lots of misc parts such as the fenders, lights and such are in storage. I wish the tub was in better shape.

I like the way your jeep has spiderman qualities that allow it to stick to the ceiling!

There's a flip facility in all photo software, it should be pretty straightforward to post these the right way up.

Hello Mate
Are you In Australia? The numbers your quoting are from three gpws that are all from around August /september 44 which is a real coincidence Add to that. I'm sure your frame number is very close to the late Al Brass who came from New Zealand. As well as gpw 222631 again August 44 which resided down in Victoria . I know that's no firm proof . However if you are indeed from Oz, I suggest you search out Ian Fawbert( hes' easy to find here on 503) Ian has done a lot of work searching the army records for jeep numbers. And I'm sure he'll have info on your jeep. If I'm completely on the wrong continent  then reach out to Tom Woldboldt. He's not on 503 anymore  but I'm sure someone will give you his contact details. Good luck !!
regards Nick

Could you specify if the plate on the glove box is Ford or Willys plate?
Also is the frame serial number located on the left front frame rail, like in any Ford ?

I've digitized thousands of jeep references from the Army Vehicle Registration books preserved by the Australian War Memorial.
Here are 2 references with hood numbers close to the OP frame number.
By chance, the original hood numbers were added in the AVR books for about 890 vehicle records.
If I remember well, I've posted these references on G503 some time ago/

222183 <--- your frame number

The references below are belonging to Ford GPW jeeps delivered to Australia.
Frame# -- Hood# -- AVR#
222201 20586466 AVR#161870 ---------- AWM-book_24_page 69
222907 20587021 AVR#161874 ---------- AWM-book_24_page 69

AVR# is the Australian Army Vehicle Registration #.

Yes the plates are all ford plates.

The stamp mark on the frame is on the normal spot (drivers side toward the front).

The frame number is 222183
The engine block number is 222488
The number of the glove box is 2(2or3)0769 not sure of the second number as there is a rust spot there.

No im from the USA here. My grandfather bought it about a decade after the war as he drove one like it during his service in WWII and was "getting nostalgic". I don't know where he got it originally and my dad was a small child when my grandfather bought it.

As said above you need to get hold of Tom W - he has studied GPW history for many years and is the only way you will get to know more. He is on Facebook and frequents ' GPW only ' amongst other groups. He is very helpful. You will need high resolution photos of your frame and data plate numbers. It is the way these numbers are stamped that show which factory the jeep was built in - only then will you be able to have any idea what your hood number is.

best of luck Barrie
