July 45 Crate Engine Found

Post by ndnile » Mon Nov 18, 2019 8:35 pm

I came in contact with a local guy that bought a local ranch and found this in the barn. I was invited to come check it out and I brought a friend with me. Friend has an appropriate GPW for this engine and with some regret I stepped back and let him do the deal. Deal is done. Engine pad is blank. Clutch disk is in the box.

Amazing to find such a time capsule!
Almost a shame to unwrap it and put in a GPW :D

Very Cool, but amazingly - dirty! Was this a used engine? Looking at all the gunk on the head and the carb, it's a good thing the starter, generator, thermostat housing, etc. were all sealed up.

Sprayed with preservative when packed, I think.
And been in a shed for 70+ years....

I do not see anything dirty, but do see an NOS factory new GPW engine with plenty of preservative applied in all the right places. My crated GPW engine looked just like this when it was uncrated and installed in 71. I These GPW engines were numerous during the Post WWII era and all looked the same. I would love to buy one of these dirty engines.
Mine sold for $85 in 1948 and I bought it back from the original buyer in 1970. It had been stored as a spare.

Here's a peek at mine after 48 years of use. Same dirty GPW July 1945 GPW crate engine as ndnile posted at the beginning of this fantastic topic.

Don't laugh, it's been that way since around 71. It runs flawless, still has its new factory feel and can perform its original mission with or without me.. Engine now has 15-20,000 miles and the JEEP has never had a tow or boost. What did I get into now?

I'm not laughing Joel Nor do i really want to point a finger. It's your vehicle and as you say , It's been running well since 1971. But right now if you look at the picture of your engine bay, as I'm doing. MAYBE you too can see some items/details which may just need to be changed. From when they were fitted back in 71

Nick, I am aware of all the details that existed when it was accepted by the military in July 1944 having been surrounded by the military parts business since it blossomed in the late 40's. I am the second civilian owner of this MB since it was surplused by the Army Air Force across the street at Dow Field in 1946. Am content with the way my MB is restored. This does not mean that I am not aware of the level of detail that others may seek. Giving back to this great hobby which has given me great pleasure, by helping others reach their goal is what it is all about.
I have been surrounded by the veterans who used these MV's since the end of WWII and am fortunate to have been trained in how to maintain them by Army service schools that still had WWII Veterans as instructors.
Just because my JEEP has been maintained with a few newer OEM and correct GI surplus parts that have given it longevity and reliability does not mean that I am not aware of any difference in detail. I still have many genuine Willys and Ford (and other WWII MV) parts on my shelves that are shared with collectors, restorers, and museums the world over.
Best we get back to the original topic that member ndnile is sharing with us
I appologize for the distraction.

Joel
No apology needed. :) Good luck with your jeep in the future and indeed yourself. Please don't take offence, But maybe when you get chance, just change the earth cable crosshead screw to slotted on the headlight bracket. :) Just to please this 'Purist' Then like you say back to the subject.

Nick, I was ready for the worst. That Cross recess Screw is a Genuine Willys Part No GM-161895 No. 10 self tapping Screw for the PTO floorboard plate on my M-38A1 that I built with all Willys Part numbered screws ordered from Jeep. I have a parts cabinet with all those Willys Screws by number.
Thanks for being polite.
