Re: July 45 Crate Engine Found
Interesting to note that with Joel's 7/45 replacement motor having "12715 X" on it...that is a LOWER number than the July 12, 1945 block stamped with "13537 X" so perhaps these "X" numbers are not necessarily completely "sequential".
Can a few other guys who have one of these late war blocks with the casting date on the side, nothing on the stepped boss and an "X" stamping on the LF corner please post the casting date and the "X" number to add to this thread?
These crated GPW motors are not all that common, so owners of them who are either rebuilding one or who have one in their jeep could help us out here.

Re: July 45 Crate Engine Found
I Have another GPW block I stripped years ago to keep as a spare, it was a first time tear down I always thought it was original to the Jeep, it apparantly was not as it is 12530X and obviously a replacement. The number is close to the 12715X that I installed in my own JEEP. I never paid attention to the Serial Number all these years.

Re: July 45 Crate Engine Found
I didn't want to hijack this thread, but I have a GPW block with an "X" stamped on it, but not as part of the serial number. I'm curious about what that might mean so I started a new thread; viewtopic.php?f=4&t=314233

Re: July 45 Crate Engine Found
If it had a factory serial number on the boss then it would not have one of those "X" numbers on the block manifold surface up at the left front corner. That might be like "12345X"....I think the solo "X" in your pic is one of many installers/inspectors stamps on the motor most likely put on at the Dearborn Motor building.

Re: July 45 Crate Engine Found
I may have found a 134L wood crate engine base as well. Looks very similar to those attached pictures. I bought it 25 years ago with an M38 engine on it (used, now getting rebuilt). I set my old cracked block in it just to show the fit. Looks to be rough cut wood. No markings that i could find. Someone could reverse engineer it and make reproductions. The big hold down "nuts" were brass.
