Carburettors

Post by Mark Jesic » Sun Nov 11, 2018 4:41 am

Guys , i was reading an item on the Pacific theatre of war. It was stated that some jeeps out there had Stromberg carburettors fitted, as they coped better with the climate. Never heard of this make on jeeps. Has anyone got any info on this make, or if it was used ?

Sounds more like Tank and Tracked Vehicle Engines, if it did happen many of them had Stromberg carburetion.
I would question the source.

Not sure about this article or what expert wrote same but it sounds like an incorrect assumption from someone with little knowledge on the subject.
Also what would someone in the NE of the US know about what happens or happened in the Pacific region?

Fact is:
In Australia [the Pacifc] Stromberg carburettors were used OEM from the late 1940's on, on GM Holden cars.
The Holden was fitted with a 6 cylinder engine of similar cubic capacity as the L134.
Later model GM Holden & Ford Falcon were also fitted with locally made Stromberg carburettors.

Stromberg carburettors [in the Pacific] were both 'cheap', readily available & fitted to WW2 Jeep intake manifold's without modification except choke cable routing.
Obviously these carburettors found a new home, rather than on GM/Ford engines when Carter was not used on anything much here.

Solex downdraught were used on M201 & Mahindra Jeeps plus numerous other European marques including VW & Volvo etc. These Solex carburettors are sold by Jeep parts suppliers round the world for aftermarket fitment to L134's.

I've read all the WWII Army Motors over te years with interest many times over and do not remember reports from the field on Stromberg Carburetors having been installed on the G503 vehicles due to climate.

Joel, i looked up Stromberg carbs on the website. Apparently they are used on many classic cars, including E-type jags, so this could have been an emergency stop-gap modification. or Bubba may have got his hands on it.

Talking about a totally different Stromberg side draught carburettor from the type one would possibly fit on a Jeep.
I did fit a quite few in the 1960's when Cater parts were not readily available or ridiculously expensive.
The Jeeps ran perfectly well with the Stromberg & no jet changing needed or metering rod, made them a much better proposition. They also had an anti percolation valve which contributed to less hot shut down & re-start issues a problem in some Australian temperatures.

Do you have a Stromberg Part Number for the type you "fitted" on Jeeps?
