jeep pet hates

Post by Mark Jesic » Tue Aug 07, 2018 1:01 am

What is your pet hate with jeeps. OK, i will get the ball rolling. My biggest annoyance is seeing someone trying to pass a Hotchkiss M201 off as a wartime jeep. It happens quite a lot here in Europe. I daresay it does not happen in the U.S.A.

Another one is trying to convince the potential acquirer that the jeep has participated to the Normandy D-Day or Provence landing.
I've even seen a CJ-2a for sale with such a stupid and false comment.

I guess that type of announcement will be more frequent as we approach the 75th birthday.

Thank God for Hotchkiss,W.O.F., etc., without their getting authorized by Jeep to keep the WWII Jeep lineage in production there would be fewer Jeeps and Jeep parts in existence worldwide.

Agreed Joel, also Hotchkiss were a better made jeep than our WW2 favourites, and you are totally correct about them saving our hobby. But i still get p***ed off with guys trying to pass a genuine Hotchkiss off as WW2.

Face it, not many WWII Jeeps are setting on the lots of surplus dealers. The days of the WWII Imports at SARAFANS and Duryeas in New York during the mid 80s sort of signaled the end of fresh surplus WWII Jeeps.

A short story here, one of the first post WWII major Surplus Truck and Parts dealers was Supreme Surplus of Metuchen, NJ. Seymore, the owner was a true gentleman. He posted a typewritten note on an index card in the window of his office door that read "We do not sell Army Jeeps". He used to give me the surplus Jeep parts he discovered he discovered in his container shipments.

Many WWII Jeep enthusiasts own Jeeps because of their symbolic appeal and those mongrelized WWII Jeeps are just fine in the eyes of parade goers and WWII/Korean era Veterans as they do not note or fuss over the difference. The PC Jeep owners, restorers and tire kickers here on G-503 have a different opinion and rightfully so, some treat those not PC as sinners.
I like all WWII Jeep restorations regardless of the skill level of the restorer, there is no need to feel ashamed of one's work.

Regarding my own Jeep, nothing, I love everything about it, even all its occasional creaks and groans, a more fun vehicle I have yet to find.

Pet hates, well not really TBH, but I am rather turned off by better than New highly restored Jeeps, IMO they just do not look right, each to their own though.
I like them with “character”, not tatty rusty or beat up, just a nice used look. [ Well maybe a bit cleaner than this  ]

Guys,i was at a show once, and a guy came up to me and asked if my jeep was one of those surplus crated jeeps. I replied "no" but smiled to myself , as the crated jeep myth had reached the shores of England. This was not a pet hate though. :D

my pet hate is that when people see me with it they say thank you for your service. i'm a vet ok but they have no way of knowing that as I don't wear the 'hat' or anything. I think they assume it because i'm with the GPW lol

also I can't believe how many people ask me if the army gave me that jeep like the military gives you vehicles

My pet hate is when people talk down about people who are doing factory restorations. I hate when people tell you thats not how a jeep should be and you are taking the jeeps history away. Do they not understand a jeep was brand new at one point and restoring a jeep to factory new condition, to the best of their ability and knowledge, is preserving the history of the jeep! In my mind a jeep that is restored to better then new is no differnet then a motor pool jeep that is restored with incorrect parts, perfectly stenciled stars and hood numbers, and with the idea that there was a war on so no standards should apply!

I am also 6'2" [ thankfully not blessed with a pregnant belly  ] and have only a 1/2" seat back instaed of the standard 2", along with slightly bending the frame back a bit, I fit in ok. Have managed over 120 miles in a day with no problems, albeit my arse was a bit numb!

Suggest those experiencing/suffering from Jeep drivers disease (a pain in the butt) re-search pilonidal disease
