1943 GPW 120050

Post by mit31 » Wed May 30, 2018 7:22 pm

Just picked this guy up. A few discoveries, and a few questions.

1. Frame is marked 120050... no data plate, so any info on date and place of manufacture is appreciated. I found the hood generator online (20383608), but again, any sharper info on a hood number would also be appreciated.

2. I was told the motor was matching, but not only does it not match, it doesn't have a number at all! It doesn't appear to be a GPW/MB motor (the boss is missing completely). Any ideas? I assume it is some form of post-war.

3. There is a filterette installed, which seems to be later than factory, but would be correct for a field install I assume?

I have lots of other questions, but I can wait on those until my John Farley book arrives from across the atlantic!

Best Regards,
Tim

I bet the filterette is original.

The engine is post war time.

It occurs to me that with the motor being post-war, the tub may not be original to the frame either, which may explain the "late" filterette.

All,

Any info on DoD, factory, and/or a sharper hood number? I've been hoping that Tom will stop in.

Tim, Tom W does not frequent the forums anymore. Your best way get ahold of him is email or Facebook. He’s on the gpw group, vep gpw, and several others

1) The GPW-18960 is not a "late" filterette, who told you that?
2) Online hood number generators are for the most part, iffy at best. I think that might be within 10,000 or so of your jeep's USA Number.
3) PLEASE, do not attempt to restore your jeep using the Farley books. Keep them on the coffee table for your non-jeep friends to admire.

Your GPW is approximately a June 1943 jeep and the DOD is depending on the factory and the factory is depending on what Tom can tell you about the frame stamping.

What’s the best way to estimate hood number then?

For us GPW guys, again it is Tom who has accumulated enough data to do that. Once he can isolate the FACTORY, with some other additional info he can usually come up with an approximate DOD. Based on the DOD and Ford records and and looking at his spreadsheet, he can usually come up with the range of USA numbers issued for that day. If a particular factory made 105 jeeps that day then his estimate may be a CLOSE as that, meaning within 105 numbers.

Gathering any information to add to Tom's data base is important...including the type of tub it has (Ford Script, Ford or ACM II) can help.

Tom goes from Ohio to the Detroit area museum to gather data but has motel, gas, food and the cost of any copies he makes there to do all this. If he can help you, help him. paypal him something...he's giving you the best possible estimates you will ever get so what is that worth? Up to you my friends!

To find a close number, you could extrapolate from a few GPW original data given by Robert DeRuyter in 2000
GPW 118883 20388435
GPW 119311 20389229
GPW 119316 20389192
GPW 120448 20378638 <-------
GPW 120926 20387018
GPW 121143 20378866
GPW 121594 20379054
GPW 122736 20326250-S

R.Cowdery data :
GPW serial # DOD
119584 ----------- MAY 28 1943
120316 ----------- JUNE XX 1943
120839 ----------- MAY 26 1943
