MVPA Judging Standards

Post by Old Pal » Wed Jun 14, 2017 10:35 pm

I know the judging standards are found on jeepdraw but it looks as though they haven't been updated recently. Anybody know where to find current judging standards for GPW. I can't seem to find them on the MVPA members website.

Also, there seems to be some contradictions in the jeepdraw judging guide and what I've found on the board. I want to know what the current judging standards are so I can change what I feel is correct to my VEP to current judging standards. Specifically, steering boxes, steering wheels, oil line material, paint finishes, etc.

The most recent addition of the MVPA GPW Judging Standards and Restoration Guide is from 1999.

Surely there have been discoveries since 1999.

Ah, I have seen a rough draft of a new judging standards book in a binder... trying to think who that was but I think it... well let me inquire?

Mike W. is working on an up-dated version of the GPWJS as we speak. You are correct in that there are some discrepancies between what is in the current version and what is found on the gee. We update and amend the gee all the time. Trying to update the GPWJS to cover all the most current information available has not been an easy task. Also the inclusion of photos in color can be expected for this new version. It will NOT be done in time for the 2017 Nationals but should be in print by the 2018 Nationals. It will be available through the MVPA only.

Jeepdraw has been updated to a certain extent, but that also requires a ton of time invested rather than a daily tweaking so while there are some differences between the GPWJS and the Jeepdraw COLORS section, I believe there may be some additional updates not yet incorporated in the COLORS section.

For the moment, Mike is working out of town and isn't available to answer a ton of PMs or emails so the best source of the info you need for a resto at this moment is the gee. That does require a SEARCH and the most recent posts often contradict the earlier ones so you have to sort through ALL the posts to see which way the wind blows so to speak.

The biggest 'standard" to overcome is who you know,,,get in good with the big names and you will have a winner
as for myself, I will be showing my jeep under a different name when completed

Unfortunately, on the forum there seems to be a bit of debate an most topics. Sometimes there are no definitive conclusions. Some topics I can think of off hand are: steering wheel color, steering box markings/manufacturers, and oil pan bolt markings. I understand that during wartime production, changes were made on the fly with little documentation and many things can happen in a 75 year period.

It will be nice to have a definitive guideline to stick to. I'm not a fan of grey areas. I am a fan of black and white, but unfortunately that is not the world we live in.

Winning is not everything, participating in this hobby is what it is all about.
And Nibs, there is more to a restoration than factory drawings. It takes talent to produce a show winner and a bit more to produce one that is turn key.

I know of a some MVPA pedigree show winners over the years that were worn out, but looked good, well almost good. one 1980's winner has been parked ever since the buyer discovered too late that his award winning Jeep was assembled with 100% junk parts. About the only moving part that was useable was the steering wheel. The Jeep literally fell apart as the buyer attempted to correct the problems but gave up when he attempted to correct the ill fitting body.

Niblet...have you checked out the basic Judging Form? For years it gave those who did use an original tub that was not PERFECT a balance against a repop tub. Points were awarded for CONDITION and ORIGINALITY...in other words, your not-quite-perfect tub with a dent or two might not get full points consideration, but then again under the originality section, the competition with a repop tub sitting next to you would not get full points consideration while yours did.

There is a fairness in all that but....the guy who used a repop tub vs another jeep owner who did not invest much time/energy to panel-beat his original tub to any great lengths and used a ton of Bondo may actually end up with a LOWER points value. There is and there should be....value for those who restore a jeep rather than replicate EVERYTHING in my mind so if you follow the GPWJS and consult Jeepdraw and ask enough questions on the gee.....I think you can effectively restore your jeep to win either in a restored class or even a motorpool class event.

Good luck!

I could not get page 1 and 2 to load to a correct size, however I believe you got the idea.
