MAINE NATIONAL GUARD MB JEEPS

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Feb 21, 2016 3:24 pm

G-503 Jeeps in Maine Army National Guard Convoys that passed by our business during the 40's-early 50's on the way to Annual Training did not have doors or side curtains. The new M-Series Jeeps that started showing up during 1952 did have enclosure kits.
It was a pleasant surprise to see local faces in uniform wave as they passed by. One year the Maine Air National Guard F-51's provided air cover for the local unit on its way to Cape Cod.

Does that say something about the people of Massachusetts?
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?
Alone cannot you it resist!

I was wondering why Cape Cod was such a dangerous place... anywhere you need a CAP, is not really a holiday location any more.

Massachusetts drivers never change. It could get foggy down on the Cape. Back in the 50's an MG type sports car tried to pass a Maine National Guard convoy and attempted to pull in between a 1-1/2 Ton Trailer and the 6X6 towing it. It got spit back out like a banana as the trailer wheel passed over the hood.
The Mustangs were the last ones that Maine Air Guard used, they were F-51 H models that were exchanged for the F-94 during late 1954, early 1955.

What was neat was the Motor March to the Cape took 2 days and the F-51H escort made the trip in little more than 1/2 hour.
The C.O. of the Maine Air National Guard at the time was Colonel Phillip E. Tukey of WWII 56th and 356th Fighter Group fame.
What was also neat was that I got to visit the Armory and look over the like new MB's and CCKW's before they were exchanged for M-37, M-38's etc.

The National Guard was issued the Half Doors with their G503 but were not used and were discarded. Am going to start looking where I last saw them back in the early 60's.

The 152nd Field Artillery Bn, MEARNG had the longest motor march of all National Guard units. The trip to summer camp was 750 miles one way.
