The jeep progress looks great! Good way to paint the springs, too.

Are you protraying this as a Willys jeep built under a Navy contract, if so, shouldn't the color be USMC "Forest Green"? If not, the OD is correct, as most were transerred to the Navy from Army contracts, IIRC.

Later, are you going to overpaint the OD with Navy Grey?

Nice to see a Jeep portraying a Navy repaint on an O.D. standard jeep!
I always imagined how the repaints were done in haste, and definitely not dismantling the vehicle:however I realize there is a limit in sloppiness that few restorers are willing to tresspass.
My own jeep was "fictionally" midnight requisitioned and just as fictionally repainted in a hurry: however I could not bring myself to do it more than mildly sloppy.I did paint only the outer face of the rims, and did not paint the underside of the hood, nor the inside of toolboxes or glovebox.
I love the way you painted the front crossmember.

I see what he's doing now, thought the grey was primer, D'Oh!

Most were probably painted by Able Seaman Bubba with a brush, after being caught sleeping on watch, while his buddies were on shore leave! Heck, we were painting our M151's and M60 tanks with brushes back in the '80s, only stopped when the CARC paint came out.

The colors and what is painted with what color is based on the actual tear down of this Jeep. It never was a USMC Jeep, It was NAVY all the way as we know this from the 2 previous owners of 67 years.
And yes we are going to overpaint the OD with the Gray. The actual paint that was on this jeep exactly color matches OD 34087/34088(-they are the same, 34088 superceded 34087 for some reason) and Gray 36173.

I'm not doubting your choice of colors, Navy grey looks great! I was thinking along the lines of the MZ-1, MZ-2 radio jeeps built for the Navy, which came painted by Willys with USMC/Navy shade 23 Forest Green. The parts manuals for these even show different numbers based on the paint color alone. Alot of times, Seebee units near the front lines had either OD, or jeeps repainted with shade 23, like the USMC jeeps.

Did you find any USA numbers on the hood when you stripped the original paint? My understanding was that the OD painted Willys that went to the Navy were built on Army contracts and would have had Army style "USA" and a "20xxxxxx" registration number on the hood that was painted over by the Navy, (Usually) as soon as the received them with the new Navy registration number. I think I even saw a pic of a Navy jeep with both numbers!

I have always been told that jeeps came off the assembly lines only in Olive Drab or in Forrest Green.
So all the Navy whichever grey jeeps had to be repaints over a standard O.D.,although by no means all the Navy jeeps were actually repainted, but kept in their original Olive Drab.

Hi Chuck,

What a nice looking jeep, I agree with the other guys, the navy grey sure does look good and makes for something other than another green jeep (of which I am one!).

One suggestion if I may, I suggest you get the solder out and tin the earthing points on the chassis (battery negative strap mounting on the tray/crossmember and on the lower angled face of the engine mounts where the block ground straps go. There's also one on the little plate under the transfer case rubber mount. I haven't been able to determine if the strap on the passengers side of the chassis for the type 2 suppression should have tinning where it moints to the chassis or not sorry.

I think the front engine plate should also have tinning on it too where the straps go down to the mounts.

This will give you a great ground, especially if your on 6 volts. Trust me, I know what it's like where there isn't a good ground on there (and an out of condition starter which 2 auto electricians told me was good and not a problem didn't help either!).

Please keep up the posts. I look forward to seeing the jeep as the body goes on and continues to go together!

Cheers,
Ian.

Wonderful job and the OD paint looks perfect. Of course, in my world, everything is OD; my vehicles, my clothes, my house, my yard.... gray colors depress me. I know, it's a Navy thing.

Here is an update on my NAVY MB. Jimmy is getting close. It's turning out really great! It's a running chassis at this point. The Body is finally done with repairs and about to get paint. See you guys at the Nationals in Portland in July !
