I’m sure there are many people on this forum who are very grateful to Zeph for the effort he has put in to creating this thread. We’ve all learned a lot I’m sure. I know I have.

I don’t wish to hijack the thread so try not to add too much to it but will admit, Zeph, that I’m going to do what you said you managed to resist during the rebuild..........

never realised that the jerry can holder was dated!

I too resisted the urge to plant a can on the back.....it was difficult but i was trying to do a factory level resto of a VEP.

For the same reason i didnt refit the tombstone blackout light that was on the jeep when i got it. I realise its a rare part and a key element of my jeep's history, but it didnt have one when it left the factory and i like the clean look of the original.

I didnt fit a trailer socket either even though i have a trailer........

It's not a date but rather a stock number…

Recently there has been some debate whether or not these numbered brackets are actually WW2 or later...
They are described in a 1944 publication, but no confirmation the number was already on the bracket during the war...
Personally I believe they are correct for retrofitted JC holders until proven otherwise...

thanks for the clarification johan.

it's a shame the manufacturers picked a stock number that can easily be read as a date.... 42-8-22.......

did they have no consideration for the fact that people in 75 years who may be restoring something that was only designed to last weeks might find this confusing?

anyone would have thought there was a war going on :D :D

HI Gordon,

I like the look of the Jerry can with the water bucket. Makes me cringe just a tad, but I don't begrudge what anyone does to their own vehicle. I would suspect that a great number of Script GPW's and Willys', for that matter, were retrofitted for a Jerry can during the war. It'll look great. Plus, if you actually carry some petrol, it will be a great addition for a long excursion.

Post some photos when your're completed. I know we would all like to see it. Measure twice and drill once! 8)

If the rear panel was original I wouldn’t do this, but as it isn’t I don’t think I’m doing any harm. If the next keeper doesn’t like it they can take it off and fill a few holes.

I think I’ve got all I need now; some scraping and painting to do.

My August 1942 GPW was originally delivered without the JC holder…
During its life the 4 holes for a JC holder were drilled and a reinforcing plate was put INSIDE the rear panel to hold the bracket.
No reinforcing plate on the outside and no strap bracket either.
Still had the original 6 footman loops for the top...

If you're putting on the JC holder, I would suggest only drilling the 4 holes... will look more original than with the added plate or strap bracket..

The Ordnance Technical Bulletin prescribing the modification of adding a JC bracket to early Jeeps only lists the four bolts and nuts needed and doesn't mention the plate or strap bracket either...

Hi Johan

Thanks for that. Food for thought. I know it won’t be original but I think I’ll end up fitting it all. The can certainly isn’t original for a Jeep but it is 1942!

Cheers

Looking forward to see the completed project. The original rear panel had both a Jerrycan holder and a trailer socket installed, so it did evolve back in the day.

I don't believe it had strap bracket IIRC. Your assembled parts look nice and ready to go!

Thanks Zeph

The four small f bolts were in the box of bits you posted, so I’m only doing this to use them up :D

I finished painting the parts ready for installing. I cut down the reinforcement plate so it didn’t sit on the raised Ford script, figuring it won’t be seen when installed.

Drilled the holes for the carrier. There’s not much room for error due to the reinforcing strip in the inside of the rear panel. Luckily I got it right first time as I don’t have the skill or equipment to move holes!
As was suggested, I’ve decided not to fit the strap bracket at the moment. I don’t suppose it will ever get on there because if I change my mind I will probably have forgotten where I put it.

Fitted...

I also put my mark on the front end by adding the requisite tow rope. If anyone in the UK is interested, I got it online from ropesdirect.co.uk. They were very good and make any size you want. I went with 7 meters (23 feet) of 1 inch Manila with soft spliced ends.

Looks great Gordon! I must say I cringed just a tad when seeing the holes in the rear panel. lol

The tow rope looks really nice too. Hopefully, you won't have a need to be towed home with it, but they are handy as I have used them before.

I hope your weather is good and you are getting to put some mileage/kilometers onin. Super smoky here. Been over six weeks now of being socked in with smoke. Yesterday was the worst it seemed. Tough to be outside for a long time, and we're back to the 100 degree heat here. Ready for fall anytime now.

Appreciate the update. Take it easy,
Zeph
