Haven't posted in quite a while. In an attempt to isolate the issue with spitting and sputtering, I recently pulled the distributor and replaced the condensor, points and refurbished the interior and exterior while I had it out. Thankfully the shaft and all is very tight and in great shape. Here are some photos:

The correct dust cap for this type late model. The ugly bright colored wire you see in the photo is a temporary jumper from the battery to the coil in an attempt to narrow wiring harness possibilities:

Don't know how I missed this ground strap, but I caught it and installed it to eliminate that as a possibility:

Yeah I know. Combats are the very last thing on my list and of course one of the most expensive. The wife was so understanding with all the money I spent the last few years that the 1500.00 for the rims is a difficult one to pitch right now.

Hi Supersonic! Thank you for the compliment.
By HT lead set, do you mean spark plug wires? If so, I got the cables themselves from Brent Mullins. They were NOS in the box and were designed for the 6 cylinder Ford GTB "Burma Jeep". He managed to obtain a supply of them a couple of years back. A good friend of mine on the G (Stirstick) put the ends on for me. The Distributor Cap I purchased from Ron, our host of this website.

I like the 7Y (July '44) distributor. I have one of those as well which I presume is original to my July '44 MB since it was on it when I bought the Jeep 30 years ago

Thank you Claude and Tarsyn!
It really means a lot that others are still looking. It was at least two years' work. I hope my detailed record can help others.
